I'm wondering how the ARCH variable is supposed to be set by crossdev;
it doesn't seem to be working at the moment.
I can see that crossdev sets ARCH in make.conf. It also sets the
profile to embedded. The embedded profile contains this in
make.defaults:
PROFILE_ONLY_VARS="ARCH ..."
So the ARCH variable in make.conf is ignored, which causes failures
whenever something references ARCH or the corresponding use flag.
I am currently hacking around this by setting ARCH in
/usr/$CHOST/etc/portage/profile/make.defaults.
I'm thinking that profile setting PROFILE_ONLY_VARS="ARCH" should be
removed. Or we could make my /etc/portage/profile workaround part of
crossdev proper.
What do you think?

Apologies for not reading the previous list traffic. I see this issue
has already been discussed in a previous thread.

yes, it was discussed but no resolution yet. Mike is tempted to remove the embedded profile
so no action yet.
PS. Sorry for my crappy email client, I am traveling so got use what is available

Has anybody got a usb jtag working in Gentoo, who could give me some
handy tips.
The device I have is an Amotec JTAGkey-Tiny which is based on a FTDI
FT2232 USB device.
I have tried to follow the Amotec documentation, but is oldish and not
completely logical.
It all works on WinXP (using VirtualBox) but as it uses gdb I would like
to use Gentoo only.
Many thanks
Billium

I use a similar device based on the same chip.

The following works for me:
~
[jason@phoenix] $ find /lib/modules/`uname -r`/ -name "*ftdi*"
/lib/modules/2.6.26/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.ko
~
[jason@phoenix] $ grep -rni ftdi /usr/src/linux/.config
1693:CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_FTDI_SIO=m
1754:# CONFIG_USB_FTDI_ELAN is not set
It should auto-load when you plug the cable in. Then udev will create
/dev/ttyUSB0 .
hth,
Jason.

Hello!
I would like to attract your attention to results of our work on project
which aims to run Gentoo linux on hx4700 and some other pda's (zaurus
for example). Now we have working stages which are available at
http://pda.gentoo.ru. These stages are built using
armv5te-softfloat-linux-eabi toolchain (gcc-4.2.2, glibc-2.7,
binutils-2.18). Note, that already over year we are using eabi toolchain
which allows additional memory and performance benefit. As a kernel we
used hh-sources-2.6.21 (mainly based on handhelds.org cvs with
additional patches for cfs-v24 (completely fair scheduler) and some
other).
Since I have only hx4700 pda then all packages were built/rebuilt on it.
Avoidance of cross-compiler greatly simplifies building. :)
We have working X:
http://kmeaw.com/ipaq-gentoo/xfce.html
http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=kmeaw0&p=d
There are two variants of X implemented on pda:
1. Xorg server and evtouche driver for touchscreen
2. Xfbdev or Xw100 server + tslib
hx4700 has no hardware keyboard so we use screen one and (wow!) we have
handwriting recognition system with keyboard (cellwriter).
All our ebuilds are available in pda overlay (layman -a pda)
all binary packages available via
ftp://ftp.gentoo.ru/projects/handhelds/packages and
rsync://rsync.gentoo.ru/gentoo-pda-eabi-iwmmxt.
Additional info available on http://pda.gentoo.ru
Questions, comments are more then welcome.
