Has anyone done a "small" install of xorg for embedded gentoo? Check out this
webpage http://heinitz-it.de/projects/qte_vs_x/index.html

What about QT embedded? From what I understand it uses the framebuffer, so no
X is needed. Also, as long as your GUI application is opensource you can use
QT Embedded for free (and your other services/programs can be closed source).
Right?

I'm try to switch my company over from DOS/Windows CE/Windows XP Embedded OSs
to a embedded Linux. I doing it on my own time, and I'm not on in software
part of the company, I'm a hardware engineer (Texas A&M Electronics
Engineering). I have the full support of a software engineering, who does
our embedded operating systems (he is a Mac and Linux guy, he does the
Windows CE builds).

The majority of the products we ship only have a 32 MB DiskOnChip, and it
displays images and text (POS/cash register data). The larger ones (Windows
XP Embedded) use a harddrive, so I not worried about a small xorg build
there.

I built the freedesktop Xserver once. It was pretty small. My biggest
problem was getting anything to compile against it. It would take a lot
of work to get it all going. The rest of this stuff I don't know about.

I have been able to put in 28M a gentoo system with basic tools for
console and graphical system.

hotplug, alsa
locales: en_US,en_GB,pt_BR, es_ES,de_DE,fr_FR,it_IT
mc, elinks, gpm

x-org 6.8.1 (vesa, fbdev), xterm, openbox+tools
openmotif, gtk+-1.2, gtk+-2.4,

emelfm2, dillo, gflashplayer, beaver, xpdf, GQview

So it's possible

you might want to look at openembedded if you haven't already.
