Il termine by-standers come potrebbe essere tradotto in maniera coretta?

Ciao Paolo,
letteralmente bystander è chi "stand by", il che può assumere decine di 
significati diversi a seconda del contesto. Se guardi nella frase precedente 
puoi vedere che si fa riferimento agli sviluppatori Stampede che secondo 
l'autore limitavano l'evoluzione del software con motivazioni ideologiche. 
Nella frase che hai riportato si fa nuovamente riferimento ad essi 
sottolineando che intralciavano lo sviluppo.
Tradurrei dunque un po' liberamente:
"A causa delle intromissioni di queste pedanti figure, ..."

"Meddlesome" è di persona che tende a creare intereferenze.
I "by-standers" sono le persone che non si schierano, non prendono posizioni
in pubblico, mentre in privato sì.
