Hi,
since we are kinda deprecating kde3 and removing support where it clashes with
newly stabled kde4 it deserves massive anouncements to users.
For first we have prepared the front-page thingie (as we already discussed over
mails internaly) and for second we should have GLEP 42 news item ready too.
Samuli was so kind to write up one based on the frontpage item so please read
it and suggest improvements if required.
Cheers
Tomas

Title: KDE3 will be masked and removed from portage
Author: Samuli Suominen <ssuominen@gentoo.org>

Please turn your KDE radio on, and make sure to turn the volume to its maximum
level for this important message.
After multiple setbacks we have finally managed to stabilise KDE4 on both
major desktop architectures (amd64 and x86), where other teams are to follow.
This means that those of you who still use KDE3 should start considering an
upgrade right away, due to various reasons. [1]
The KDE3 support is being dropped with immediate effect. This means that
ebuilds are dropping KDE3 support where they were broken, or clashing with
KDE4.
If you wish to still use KDE3, and you want to help others with having KDE3
around, drop a mail to kde@gentoo.org, where we can give you commit access to
the special overlay which will specifically contain only KDE3 packages. [2]
Sadly upstream is not supporting KDE3 anymore and we simply lack the manpower
to keep support for both (as you might have noticed in the past few months
KDE3 has become more and more rusty for which we humbly apologize).
Sorry to bring you the bad news and with hope that KDE4 will suit your needs,
Tomas Chvatal

Maybe add your self as author? Multiple "Author" fields are allowed.
(And yes, UTF-8 in header fields is allowed, too. ;-)

Please wrap lines at 72 characters, which is the standard for news
items.

I think this paragraph shouldn't be included in a news item that
concerns primarily the main Portage tree. IMHO at least the part about
commit access should be left out.

Omit the signature. I think it's not formally forbidden, but neither
the example in GLEP 42 nor any of the news items so far had one.

When I am reading the news item I have already actively done it with
eselect news so I think it should be better to just start with the
actual content.

It sounds a bit too chatty/informal for a news item to me. Also, a few
phrases look unusual to my native English eye. Suggestions included,
YMMV as they say.

KDE3 to be masked... looks more "proper".

I'd cut that. It's appropriate for the front-page, but consider, by the
time they read it as a news item, they will have seen the warning from
their PM, and will already have "turned their radio on" so to speak. So
it seems strange for a news item. At least to me.
> After multiple setbacks we have finally managed to stabilise KDE4 on

... with other teams to follow.

Initial thought was s/due to/for/, but that still doesn't sound right. I
believe it's because "This means" indicates that the reasons have already
been outlined, so the "due to various reasons" just doesn't fit. "This
means" is also repeated just below, so how about removing it here, like
so?
For this and other reasons as discussed at [1], those of you who still
use KDE3 should be considering an upgrade in the near future.
> The KDE3 support is being dropped with immediate effect. This means that

Effective immediately, KDE3 support is being dropped. This means that
KDE3 ebuilds that clash with KDE4 or are broken are being removed.
> Kde packages are moved to special overlay named as kde3 in layman. Note
> that this overlay is going to be user maintained and not developer
> reviewed. [2]
Based on a previous comment, I believe it's unbroken packages being
moved. Broken ones are being simply dropped. Does that need stated or
has that changed? Splitting that first sentence in half seems clearer to
me as well, and I change the wording of the second sentence slightly, as
well. So:
Unbroken KDE3 packages will be moved to a special overlay named kde3.
This can be found in layman. Note that this overlay is going to be user
maintained and will not be developer reviewed. [2]
You may wish to emphasize that last warning in caps (or not)...
... WILL NOT BE DEVELOPER REVIEWED.
[The rest looks fine to me.]
Thus, all the changes together without the commentary (add the apology at
the end, which I omit here for space). Again, YMMV, feel free to take
what you like and reject the rest, or just reject all of it, for that
matter.

Can someone explain -- or point to the relevant docs which explain --
how to use the KDE 3 overlay ? Perhaps this sb in the news announcement.
I've successfully installed most of KDE 4.3.1 ,
but without the desktop stuff, for which I have adopted Fluxbox.
I still have remnants of KDE 3.5.10 (details from my personal pkg list):
W 090501 kde-base/kdeartwork-kworldclock-3.5.10
090606 kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.10-r6 [ 16 min ]
W 080924 kde-base/kmahjongg-3.5.10
W 080924 kde-base/ksokoban-3.5.10
W 090501 kde-base/kworldclock-3.5.10
080924 kde-base/libkdegames-3.5.10 [for kmahjongg etc]
Kmahjongg 4 lacks the removed-tiles display (it's promised);
Ksokoban hasn't been ported to KDE 4 (someone's working on it);
Kworldclock shows local times around the globe,
which Marble should show, but doesn't (yet?).
Everything still works & nothing (3 & 4) interferes with anything else.
Hopefully, it won't be difficult for users to keep KDE 3 items
as long as they need them & don't cause any other problems.

Duncan thanks for hints and updates. I incorporated them and hopefully now the

I also updated accordingly the gnk3.xml to match it :]

I'm still not quite happy with that, but I'm not quite sure what to do to
fix it, either. Not without my characteristic paragraphs of
