Wow, I managed to get > back on topic :) Hmm... Yes, I'm beginning to see this, now that the discussion seems to be widening my viewpoint a bit. One of those "Duh, why didn't I see that before?" moments on my part. I'm not sure as to the uncompress issue (as you followup with), but simply setting a different PKGDIR location when I run gcc-config should do what I wanted, and I can then simply switch back to the old tree if necessary with a quick reset of PKGDIR.
