When cvs.gentoo.org was moved to a new server recently, viewcvs has
not been re-enabled yet. We are currently evaluating options for
providing a publicly viewable repository, and hope to have something
in place sooner rather than later.

Related to this, it seems our daily CVS changelog mail (gentoo-cvs) has
gone as well. Any ideas if this will come back?
Cheers,

So how do the developers suggest that users get copies of ebuilds that
have been removed from the portage tree and just happen to be the only
one that works properly on my system??
I thought the ability to get older stable snapshots was supposed to get
easier not harder.
Seems to be I won't be putting Gentoo on any servers for a while yet :(

Let us not over-react, shall we? You may or may not be aware that several servers had to migrated this past week. And urgently. Time being the unfriendliest of adversaries, in that it advances ruthlessly, prevented us from bringing back viewcvs functionality. We'll have some sort of web based thingy back online in a few days.

Thank you Seemant, it's always a lot nicer to get bad new along with a
reason (Well at least it makes it easier to digest). Your post is a lot
more informative and at least now I have an idea why there is no
viewcvs.
I'm sorry if my post seemed an over-reation, but I think my initial
question was/is a valid one. How are users supposed to get ebuilds that
have been removed from portage if they need them?

At the moment, there is no way of doing this. That's why we're diligently
working to get a web-enabled CVS interface up and running as soon as
possible.

Would cvsupd(8) require fewer resources than viewcvs.cgi or similar?
If so, you could leave supporting web based cvs access to
other volunteers.
