Subject: [gentoo-dev] why compile java-apps?
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 00:50:42 +0200 [thread overview]
Message-ID: <cgtmp9$3n5$1@sea.gmane.org> (raw)
Hi,
many many ebuilds (dev-java/ant for example) download the source, and
compile it. In my eyes, this is unnecessary. ByteCode will be
JIT-compiled anyway, and all the java-compilers from sun or
blackdown-jdk's produce pretty much the same ByteCode. An exception may
be jikes, but it has more bugs than problem it solves, and is not longer
under development.
So why did you decide, that ant for example should be compiled instead
of simply downloading the binary distribution?
Thx
Sven
