Does anyone know anything about java-xml-pack and the above ebuilds?

That's the JAXP stuff from SUN, right? I would guess that (if you have 'java'
in your USE) these packages need the JAXP (Java API for XML Parsing) stuff to
work. Since it's not (to my knowledge) included in Blackdown, you'd have to
get it from SUN and put it in the classpath of whatever JDK/JRE you're using.

Thanks for the reply mbutcher. I downloaded the file as requested in the
ebuild. It is a *.zip file. Is there a special linux prog to unzip this
file? or is it a windows file?

Regards,
Kevin

There is a program called unzip which will unzip it. It can be found
in portage category app-arch. According to the depends in
jaxp-1.1.3.ebuild, you much have unzip merged before you can ebuild
jaxp. If you're using emerge it will do this for you automatically.

Now, as for getting jaxp to emerge correctly, you need to download
the zip file from http://java.sun.com/xml/downloads/javaxmlpack.html

The only one I could find here was java_xml_pack-winter01-dev.zip
which appeared to work. You need to place this in /usr/portage/distfiles
and rename it to java_xml_pack-fall01.zip (since that's what jaxp is
looking for) OR you can edit jaxp-1.1.3.ebuild where it says:
At=java_xml_pack-fall01.zip
and make it say
At=java_xml_pack-winter01-dev.zip

Either one will work, then type emerge --pretend dev-java/jaxp
(to see what it's going to do) then emerge dev-java/jaxp

In case you're wondering why you have to download this manually, instead
of portage getting it for you, it's because Sun Microsystems uses a
random ftp location for it's files, which requires you to visit their
website read the license agreement and then download the file.

Of course it would have been nice if Karl had said a little more than
just "!!! Please download X from X". But then again, this way I learned
more about portage by figuring out how to do it.

Thank you Jared H. Hudson! Excellent instructions actioned 100%. I now have
142,292 files on my gentoo system including unzip and jaxp. A large number
of ebuilds which installed 100%. Well done gentoo!
Thank you everyone. Still have about 12 to go. And still guilty of using
Windows for email! Well evolution still crashes but I will crack that one
too.
Thank you for your helpful emails.

Kevin

Hello,

i think, there is something wrong with gentoo and lvm (does nobody tested
a fresh install with lvm?) ... When i tried to setup a large Volumegroup
(about 54 GB), i got error-messages becaus there was not enoungh free space
within /etc to write /etc/lvmtab.d/gentoo (i named this Volumegroup "gentoo").
Maybe a bigger Ramdisk would be a Workaround (or should we mount tmpfs to
the directory /etc/lvmtab.d after the first "vgscan"?). What do you think?
The file /etc/lvmtab.d/gentoo is about 256 kb size ...
As first workaround on my desktop system, i deleted /lib/modules/2.4.16/pcmcia,
because i don't have any pcmcia devices ...

ciao,

They should depend on dev-java/jaxp-1.x. I guess.

We have ebuilds for the JAXP stuff, so there shouldn't be a need to do
all the nasty manual trickery.

However, we are not allowed to link directly to Sun's XML pack, so you
will have to download the .zip file yourself and put it in
/usr/portage/distfiles before trying to merge jaxp.

I guess we really should make a bug-report out of this one.

Try to delete something bigger like /usr/bin/ssh. The ramdisk is really
full. You will not be able to store the information about lvm-disks in
this ramdisk. It's not a problem in gentoo's support of lvm!

I know the problem (and solved it with deleting pcmcia-drivers).
My question is, if we can make the ramdisk bigger to remove this
problem (i am shure, i am not the only person with such problems
in future ...).

Hi,

Just do:
mkdir /tmp/etctmp
mount -t tmpfs none /tmp/etctmp
cd /etc
tar -cpf - * | tar -f - -xvpC /tmp/etctmp
mount -o bind /tmp/etctmp /etc

After this you should have enough free space in /etc :)

PS: Installing Gentoo from bootdisk onto a root LV does not work. I get
kernel panic while mounting the root LV (has something todo with devfs). Also
the 'lvmcreate_initrd' command does not work while in the build chroot (it
cannot unmount the loopback device).

Have a nice day,

Also a nice solution ... ;-)

I will try it within the next few days ...
All in all, it sounds like some necessary work before lvm is "ready for
end-users" ...

ok, but lvm is not a need for the normal office user i think. It's also
nice for him. But he use some big distribution like suse or mandrake
(which will support lvm some time through a gui) and feel ok with it.

cool hack!

I tried for 5 days straight to get this working! My solution was to remove root
from LVM. I also had trouble with lvmcreate_initrd. Forcing an unmount didn't
help either.

Thanks
