Hey
I think the next days we could try to move gentoo to the next compiler
generation. Now, while glibc officially supports the new compiler suite
i think we doesn't need to flag it with the dirty
--disable-santity-checks. Yeeaaah

How to handle backward binary compatibility to: C++, STL ?
The C++ ABI has change and it will change in 3.1.x

I don't really know about this. OK 3.1.x seems not a so big change like
now towards 3.0.x. Mhh, my latest try to build kde-3 with gcc-3.0.3
works in most parts ok. There are application with buggy code. But i
don't think it's a problem on the compiler-side anymore. Gcc-3 is more
standard compilant and i think thats the way we must go.
The world is moving around and we can't stop it ;-)

Sure, but sometimes you have to sacrifice cutting edge for
mass stability. Most users would not want to wait weeks
until kde or gnome, etc is fixed against gcc-3.0.3. And
many will not want to hassle with fixing build errors.

ok it will be better all the time. The glibc support is the first big
step. That big application like kde could be build with this compiler
version is true for the most ones. The others will follow. Now we need
to get a stable working system based on this new basis. I give it one
month or a gcc-3.0.4. And then i hope all apps work.

try the current cvs.. it's funny. One of the biggest problems is that a
new compiled kernel crashed while attemding to start init... hi hi

Personally, I'm running gcc 3.0.3 with a gnome system. I've been able to
fix every bug that I've come across.
Which to date are with:
netkit-telnet (needed more includes added)
pwdb (needed it's static library moved)
nautilus (needed std:: stuff in the mozilla section)
xfree86-4.2.0 (needed -lstdc++ added to glxinfo)
mesa-glu (needed a quicksort.cc (function prototype changed)
I think that's it so far. I'm trying to make patches for everything I've
come across and 1 by 1 add them to bugzilla.

Wow thank you. Some of them are difficult packages. :-(

I think it would be wise to wait with moving to gcc 3.* until after we
have released 1.0. After that it would be a very good time to move to
3.* in the unstable branch, and make sure that all packages compile with
it. When that job is finished we can release a new version.
