Anyone considered closing the list to non-subscribed posts? This spam
is getting pretty annoying :(

It has been discussed but many people have objections because it makes the
list more 'closed' and requires extra steps for a newbie to ask
questions. Another problem is that many people have multiple accounts
which causes more problems.

This is the gentoo-dev list, shouldn't newbees asking in the gentoo-
user or gentoo-newbies lists?

Hrm. This being the dev list, I don't see why the newbie issue is a
problem. In addition, if a newbie does not wish to subscribe, there
are always the forums and IRC. Forums require registration, and IRC
requires at least a minimum of effort, why not mailing lists?
Is subscribing to a list really so much to ask?

I have multiple accounts, and requiring subscription doesn't
cause me any problems. What exactly are you referring to here?

i still really think this should be a closed list, its not a "user"
list, its a "dev" list, although I see more newbie requests for help
than anything on it these days :/ Keep the gentoo user list open and
let the spammers have fun there I guess.

i'd have to agree ... things like -dev and above should be closed while
-user and -newbies and such make sense to have open ... then the holy
wars can happen on -user and even more chaos can ensue ;)

Talking about spam...
Besides gentoo-dev, I'm also subscribed to gentoo-announce and
gentoo-desktop. 99% of the spam I get comes from gentoo-dev. I believe
this happens because the email address for gentoo-dev is listed on the
front page of the website, while the others are not.
So, IMHO, if it is to be kept there, it should also be protected
against spam. The way it is now, it's like it is _asking_ for spam...

I don't see the usefulness of having mailinglists open at all. I
personally dislike when I get both a personal reply and a reply to the
mailinglist, and thus always reply only to the mailing list and not
individual users (unless it's a personal matter, than I don't send it
to the mailinglist, ofcourse). I get enough mail as it is and
don't need multiple copies. :)
As for us with multiple accounts; there are ways to set the From:
field in all decent mailprograms. Why not educate these two or three
users that suffers from this rather than exposing thousands of
subscribers to spam?
As I said, mailinglists should be closed for subscribers. It's easy
enough to both subscribe and unsubscribe from mailinglists through
various web-interfaces that even total newbies should be able to
use it. Besides, as someone else said; there are both Forums and IRC
and probably some other information channels as well that can be used
if you can't figure out how this subscribe thingymagick works. :)
//Humming, happy user of spamassassin; but some Spam always manages to
get through that filter. This particular spam did. ;)

This should be off list I think. Rather, send your concerns to
