you have added your user to the wheel group in /etc/groups?
That allways worked.
Yeah kde seems to ignore /etc/profile, I could not figure out how to
change this.
You said it worked in linux-from scratch. I will take a look at it (I
like that concept too).
Can you start netscape direct typing /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape? If not run
it with strace (dev-ustils/strace) and send me the log please.
This is the first time this problem occured.
bye achim~
Ok should we try to solve one problem at a time, actually since your online
do you have a chat client maybe we could talk straight to each other? If not
here is netscape script in /usr/X11R6/bin/ it errors out with
/usr/X11R6/bin/netscape
/usr/X11R6/bin/netscape: line 8: 25477 Bus error
$MOZILLA_HOME/netscape $@
Ok and yes I followed the directions on faq and I did a cat on the
/etc/groups and it shows root and naz (wheel::10:root,naz) that is the exact
line.
The kde is weird because they do not have any directions on linuxfromscratch
just how to build a base system then I compiled kde from just downloading
kde for kde.org newest release 2.1 and it worked fine with my profile.

Oops almost forgot if I start Konsole it just shows (bash-2.04$) without any
colours or my name so it's not source profile I'm guessing but if I run
(bash --login) then it sources profile and colors show up correctly and it
shows (naz@c586701-a naz >) the same works if I just login command line.

k, I found a quick hack that fixes this problem,
add -login to #!/bin/sh in /opt/kde2.1/bin/startkde
that worked here.

.profile ? must be a typo.
Do you mean in the xterminals?
Number two su does

That question is covered in the faq
And then lastly the netscape script in /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape is

hrm, that's strange do you have the sys-libs/lib-compat package
installed?
bye achim~
Ok I check on the sys-libs/lib-compat and yes it's installed and I'm
speaking of the Konsole the kde terminal application it will not export
.profile because none of the colours, etc will not show up it's just flat
colour text (all one color) and the prompt only says (bash-2.04$) not my
name or hostname and su still says Password:
su: Authentication failure
Sorry.
I'm kinda sure that they are all tied to together. I have been using linux
from scratch and never had this problem, I'm not sure what I'm missing
though something do with shadow password suite, I'm just taking shoots in
the dark though.
Thankyou for all the help.
Naz

you have added your user to the wheel group in /etc/groups?
That allways worked.
Yeah kde seems to ignore /etc/profile, I could not figure out how to
change this.
You said it worked in linux-from scratch. I will take a look at it (I
like that concept too).
Can you start netscape direct typing /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape? If not run
it with strace (dev-ustils/strace) and send me the log please.
This is the first time this problem occured.

Number one error that I'm having Konsole is not exporting /etc/.profile
properly so I'm am without colors in my termial window. Number two su does
not work will not allow me to su to root it says su: Permission denied
Sorry. And then lastly the netscape script in /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape is
giving me this error /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape: line 8: 5048 Bus error
$MOZILLA_HOME/netscape $@
Thats it, the new xmovie works great! thanx!

I have the same problem - no clue.

Achim has answered this one several times and apparently it is now on the
FAQ. You need to put your user in group 'wheel' and update group 'wheel'
to allow your user in order for su to work on gentoo.
