Just saw this on Freshmeat: A NIX filemanager called gentoo! Hmm. Should it be in ports?

Achim, still ready to polish any documentation you would like to send my

If I understand you correctly, yes. We are a completely new distro,
built from the ground-up, unlike many others who are based on RedHat.

I am about to get a new computer on which I plan to run Gentoo. Will a nVidia GeForce2 MX200 32MB (or possibly 64 MB) with 4X AGP work without too much trouble in Gentoo? I gather that this is the case from the nvidia Troubleshooting Guide, but I want to be sure before I get one.
Are both KDE and GNOME include on the binary CD? I can't find a package listing on the site. If so is it Ximian or regular Gnome?
How long is 'forever' when compiling X and KDE? It dosn't matter much, but do you have any idea how long it might take on a 933 MHz system?
Thanks.

About the graphics card, it should be NO problem. The only thing you will have to do is to patch the drivers to use devfs(recomended) or turn devfs of.

Both are included, and it's regular Gnome. (Hallksi, don't kill me if I'm wrong ;) )

Planning to install from the build CD, I think you should be pretty much finished over a night with a descent I-net connection, but KDE will take some time to compile. But then you might not compile Mozilla(using konqueror) and so on and it'll save you pretty much time.

Yes, install X. Compile kernel without AGP or DRM support ( don't need it
so why compile it in, this is necessary but it makes sense.
Doaload nvidia GLX and NVidia kernel stuff from nvidia.com follow
instructions in readmes.
Cake.
And it works well too.

Nope, it's not ximiaized.

No special gentoo-related trouble, it'll work just like under any other
distro, or possibly better.

The NTSG (nvidia troubleshooting guide) is terribly outdated. Some of what it
says may no longer be true. Note the driver version it's for.

On my P-III-900 w/ 256 MB RAM: X=1.2 hours, KDE=3.5+ hours for
kdelibs+kdebase and another 3 or 4 for everything else.

Because it was apparently a bad interaction between Mozilla and Hotmail;
it was not something that he intended to have happen.

Hi
I experience problems building kde:
when emerging: kde-base/kdebase/kdebase-2.2.ebuild i get:
..snip...
checking for xmkmf... /usr/X11R6/bin/xmkmf
checking various X settings... configure: error: (imake) failed
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
!!! ERROR: the make command did not complete successfully.
!!! ("make")
!!! Since this is a critical task, ebuild will be stopped.
!!! emerge aborting on /usr/portage/kde-base/kdebase/kdebase-2.2.ebuild .
X itself starts ok with twm - as is expected. Do I perhaps need something
which I haven't merged but somehow slipped through the dependencies?
kdebase-2.1.1-r1 also fails with an error and 2.2_beta1 compiles but
crashes after startx (seems to be problem with ksmserver, it's not in
the path but even when it is i just get a gray screen...).
And finally: kde-env-2.2 does not create /usr/X11R6/bin/wm/kde[XX]
which is expected by xinitrc to be there to work with ~/.wm.
regards
Tibor Rudas

1) Where is the output of the init-scripts logged??
2) I like makeing music with my pc.. are there any progs like a drum-computer or so?
3) For the 1.0 release a short description of every package would be helpfull for newbies..
Thanks to the developers...

Any chance you can whip up an ebuild for this and submit to
ebuild@gentoo.org ?
Oh, and wrt to Java, pop by #gentoo on irc.openprojects one day and see if
I'm there, so we can test why Java doesn't work for. In the meantime I'll
see if I can't add an IBM JDK/JRE ebuild (but you have to register with
IBM [free] to get their JDK and JRE).

Dear Sir:
I live in a very rural part of Minnesota where broadband is available to
us. We do have wireless options but for the most part, it is too expensive to
afford right now. So we have to use a dial-up connection most of the time and
what my question is. Will gentoo linux be selling cd's that are capable of
installing on a system and if you do will it support dial up features as well.
I have read much documentations on your linux and would like to try it but I do
not have the broadband or network capabilities to download it. Please inform
me in response to this question.
Cordially,
Al Dunn

Dear Sir/Madam
According the news on your website the 'AMD-bug' is related to AMD Atlhlon-,

family, but this 'bug' does appear in XP:s too, or does it?

Hi,
I do wish to apologise in advance for posting to both lists. I had
posed this question on gentoo-user but received no response. So, I
shall ask again, here, with hope for better feedback. During bootup,
at depscan.sh step, I get the error which looks like: depscan.sh: awk:
command not found. I was wondering if this is subtly dangerous or not,
and what the fix to this might be.
The second issue concerns mc/mcedit. I have mcedit set up as my editor
in mutt. But, when I save a message I get the following, everytime:
load_client_codepage: filename /usr/lib/codepages/codepage.850 does not
exist.
Again, I do not know what this is all about. While we are on the
subject of mail. I have installed postfix, and set it up, per the
website's instruction guide, to use /var/spool/mail. I sent mail to
myself, but I am unable to delete that mail, because the mailbox is
readonly, for some reason. Also, I am having some trouble sending
mail.
The biggest issue of concern today, though, is glibc2.2.5. I tried to
emerge it earlier today, and towards the end of the install process I
got an error which repeated itself hundreds of times that libdl.so.2
was missing. It is, in fact, not missing. Anyway, my box was left
useless, and I ultimately had to unpack a slack.tgz for glibc-2.2.3
onto the root of my gentoo partitions (followed by ldconfig -r -- I
have a feeling that I may not have needed to unpack the tgz, come to
think of it). That allowed me to boot, and then I tried to emerge
again. Same error. Eventually, I simply emerged 2.2.4 back on here,
and things seem to be in order. Funny thing is that Matthew Kennedy,
one of the gentoo ebuild contributors emerged 2.2.5 with no hitches
whatsoever, and we are running almost identical systems. Any ideas why
my system did not like it? Also, why is ssmtp part of emerge --world
update? I already have postfix installed as my mta..
Thanks so much for all your time, and my apologies again for posting to
both lists -- I do realise I am being somewhat rude in doing that. My
intention is not to spam, but rather to get some help, which my
spamming may not aid, because some people may get annoyed --- I am
getting dizzy with this line of thinking...
Anyway, thanks,
Seemant
PS. My congratulations to Mr. Robbins and the developers - Gentoo is
what I have been looking for in a distribution. Thank you for
providing it.

This seems to be a warning because the samba supporting part of midnight commander
doesn't find a code page. You need samba for correct chars if you use the samba
browsing feature in mc.

It is a 'awk' command outside a function in /etc/init.d/xdm
that is causing this.
Copy /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/files/4.2.0-r6/xdm.start to
/etc/init.d/xdm and it should be fixed.

Beware: some DFE-530TX+ cards aren't the same as others. My original
DFE-530TX+ card was supported beautifully under Linux with the via-rhine
module. The new may work with a different module, but I wasn't able to
get it to work at all, despite claims on the box. Do you know what
revision of this card you have?
If you've already got it working in another distro, nevermind. Just find
out what module you're loading there and do the same in Gentoo.

matt
PS. This is probably more appropriate for gentoo-users.

I followed links from Slashdot to you. Reallly like the site,
especially Larry the Cow & am asking my network administrator to
explain "portage" - I've mostly used 'portage' in the context of
carrying a canoe up a fall, or down river to avoid a treacherous
rapid.
Will there be a port to Power PC, so Gentoo Linux could run on iMac,
iBook, or G3/G4?
Many thanks,

So if you have an intel box and want to build ebuilds for PPC would you have
to build a cross-compiler? (Im a masochist).

gcc is able to do cross-compilation.
Check your make.conf for CHOST, CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS, this should give you an
idea how you can do this in gentoo:
You will probably want to
export CHOST=... export CFLAGS=... etc.
appropriate host and optimization flags.
Then for an actual package do:
emerge --buildpkg package
This will build the package and put .tbz2 file under $PKGDIR (check your
conf!). But do test these builds on the proper system!
This has however a side-effect:
In addition to building the package it will merge it! Just unmerge it
aftewards (.tbz2 is preserved). Alternatively you may do all steps manually
avoiding merge (so the package only gets built and not installed, especially
important if you already have such package installed on your sys) - check
ebuild manual to see necessary steps.

This may not be the easiest way to do it, but the _right_ way is to go over to the Forums or to
the gentoo-user mailing list and ask there. Of course, the easiest way is to just throw a message
in any one of the mailing lists, but this is rather annoying in general.
This is the development mailing list, and the problem you are having has nothing to do with
development. It is a user thing, and so fits in the user mailing list and/or in the "All Things
Gentoo" or "Installing Gentoo" sections of the Forums. I'm sure there will be plenty of people to
help you there.

Hello...
Finally a distribution tailored to each user's own preferences!! I have
been using Redhat for a while, and I have recently tried SuSE. Frankly,
while SuSE was a lot friendlier to install, there are too many bells and
whistles that get in the way for a scientist or an engineer. It is very
difficult to compile an optimized late version of kernel on these systems
because these systems are built to account for just about any kind of
hardware, which makes it a semi-black box.
I really appreciate Gentoo's philosophy on optimization and customization
with respect to EVERY user and his/her system. I am a semi-beginner.
I've used Linux for about 2-3 years for science/engineering purposes, and
while I am by no means an advanced user, I usually find my way around
Linux alright... I've done some configs and customizations, compiled
kernels multiple times... And always I've run into the same problem...
Too much stuff that I don't want on my system and yet can't safely remove
without expert knowledge.
This is my second day of getting to know your distro, and already I think
it's the coolest one I've run into so far!! By a lot of aspects... I've
always thought that only the things you work hard to get will bring a
great pay-off. So far, it seemed like most Linux distros have been too
easy to get up and running :))
I am a beginning computational scientist in Chemical Engineering, and
while most people in my department here at Princeton University are stuck
with Windows, I seem to be one of the few going the "hard way" but seeing
a much greater pay-off in the future. I've learned from scratch about
computer hardware and Linux systems, and as little as school work has
allowed me to continue my learning of those things (being a chemical
engineer rather than a computer scientist), I think I am fairly content
with where I am... I REALLY have a lot of respect and appreciation for
Linux developers, especially with a philosophy such as yours at Gentoo.
Maybe if I get rich, I'll be sure to remember Linux community :))
Now, your releases of Gentoo seemed to not be very far apart in time, so
I am anticipating a new release of Gentoo soon... Am I correct in that
expectation? Could you tell me APPROXIMATELY when you are planning to get
the new version of Gentoo out to the public?
Many thanks,
Denis

Hallo,
I have a question about installing gentoo.
During the installation I got an error at the point of unpacking the stages.
After typing " tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stage?-*.tbz2" I get this message:
tar: /mnt/cdrom/stage2-i686-1.2.tbz2: Not found in archive
tar: /mnt/cdrom/stage3-i686-1.2.tbz2: Not found in archive
I downloaded the bigger ISO-file and with "ls /mnt/cdrom this to files are shown.
Do you have any idea what the problem is?
Thank you
Gerrit Mattausch

ive seen this before ... basically the users reading the install docs
dont realize that in Code listing 16:
<snip>
# cd /mnt/gentoo
# tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stage?-*.tbz2
# mount -o bind /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
# cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf
</snip>
the tar command should have the ? and the * replaced by
their own input ... maybe the install docs should be updated
to reflect this ?

Glenn,
Questions like this belong on the gentoo-user or newbie list, not dev...
But, yes, you certainly can install gentoo on a Dell Inspiron. I've had it
running on my 8000 for since pre-1.0. If you have trouble with a particular
aspect of the installation, post a specific question along with the details.
You might also want to have a look at Linux-on-laptops --> Dell:

Hi,
Are you using any content management for your website? If so, what are you
using?
Thanks

I have two requests/suggestions.
1) I think it would be nice if when a packages build fails on an emerge -u
world, it would continue building packages that do not need the package
that failed. Perhaps at the end of the build output a list of packages
that failed.
2) I think it would also be nice if emerge had a log function that would
log the build output to files. Perhaps options like log everything, log
warnings & errors, and log everything and display only warnings or errors.
It might not be hard for some of us to do this with a | or two and shell
commands, but it would be nice if it was an emerge option.
I think these features would be helpful to some, and definitely
appreciated by me. They sure would have helped when I was switching to gcc
3.x from my pre 1.0 system. I'm sure that the build logs could also help
bug reports.
Thank you for giving ports to linux.
Mike

there are already bugs open on bugs.gentoo.org
to address both these points. feel free to add
yourself to the CC list for updates.
