Yep, this has to do with Alsa 0.9.  See 
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2324

This brings up a much larger question: why did gentoo switch to 0.9 
before major packages like KDE3's kdemultimedia was ready for this 
version of Alsa?
