Yep, it was true until gentoo_rc6. Now, you can automount devfs without any problem.
Anyway, what exactly "it says" when "it says has been compiled without devfs" ?
And when? During the boot of the kernel, or after starting init in some scripts?
What happens when you pass "devfs=mount" option to kernel during the boot?
