I used Tom's rtbt to install Gentoo with the 1.1a CD, it worked fine, had to change mount parameters to bind /proc though.

I don't remember the error. just the line 'chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash'
didn't work. Just try it, maybe it will work now. It's half a year since I tried
it.
