# Michał Górny <mgorny@gentoo.org> (28 Aug 2017)
# Alike xfce4-mixer, relies on gstreamer:0.10 (gstreamer:1.0 removed
# mixer wrappers). Last commit upstream in 2014. PulseAudio users
# can switch to xfce-extra/xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin
# or xfce-extra/xfce4-volumed-pulse.
# Removal in 30 days. Bug #629212.

OK, you singled out pulseaudio users when you mentioned an alternative.
What about non-pulseaudio users?
Seems to me that message could be made better for them regardless of
whether there's a non-pulseaudio alternative or not. If so, listing
it/them would of course be useful.
If there's no non-pulseaudio alternative, I'd suggest explaining why,
something like this, depending on the reason:
# Xfce now requires pulseaudio so there's no non-pulseaudio alternative
# other than switching away from xfce on upgrade. Sorry.
Or:
# No xfce/gtk-based non-pulseaudio alternative known. This masking
# message may be updated with alternatives should any be suggested.
Or:
# No xfce-based non-pulseaudio alternative available. Suggested
# non-xfce alternatives include <whatever>
Meanwhile, at a minimum, usage of alsamixer in a terminal window
might be suggested. Something like:
# In the absence of other alternatives the ncurses-based alsamixer
# from media-sound/alsa-utils may be used in a terminal window.
I'm on kde here, but sometimes use alsamixer if kmix isn't working
(I'm on live-git-kde after all) or is "working" but I'm not getting
the expected results or I simply want a different visual presentation.

There are alternatives that seem to work well with xfce and alsa,
for example media-sound/volumeicon or mediasound/pnmixer.

There is also media-sound/tudor-volumed if you don't have a mixer with
built-in keybinds.
