Watching the bugs without a real home, I've seen a lot of new bugs
requesting packages that perform backup tasks.
The tree has collected a reasonable number of packages dealing with backup
already, and it's not exactly easy to find them.
So I'd like opinions on a new category, for backup tools. Also I'd like to know
who's interested in joining a herd to support this category.
Actively maintained:
--------------------
app-admin/amanda - robbat2
app-admin/bacula - zul
app-arch/dar - matsuu
app-arch/flexbackup - max,mholzer
app-arch/hdup - mholzer
app-arch/konserve - kde-other
app-arch/pdumpfs - matsuu
app-arch/tob - centic
net-misc/duplicity - ticho
net-misc/rdiff-backup - mholzer
net-misc/rsnapshot - kloeri
sys-apps/mondo-rescue - base-system,pfeifer,wschlich
Possibly abandoned packages:
----------------------------
app-admin/furball - no owner
app-cdr/cdbkup - aliz? (no metadata)
sys-apps/reoback - no owner
Bugs for new packages:
----------------------
afbackup - #33865
amanda-afs - #65922
arkeia-light - #78711
backuppc - #80818
boxbackup - #71995, #82447
cdbackup - #75291, #81312
dbackup - #39976
dirvish - #59954
faubackup - #67640
mkcdrec - #35715
scdbackup - #64018
symbackup - #46971
taper - #80605

Sounds sensible to me, given the number of tools and also how
important backups are to many people - assuming you can find some
people willing to join the herd.

I also think it's a great idea.
One thought: app-backup vs. sys-backup? No real opinion on my side
though :)

Seeing as they're applications more than system tools I'd say
app-backup is more "obvious".

Ok. F1 (aka "/vote yes") for app-backup :)

I've created the bugzilla account now, and given it all of the bugs.
Rough planned timeline:
now+1 week - create existing category, move existing packages.
now+3 weeks - try to fix existing package bugs.
now+7 weeks - See about adding new packages slowly.

Would all of the above maintainers please chime in with information on
how they want to handle their package with the move to app-backup?
I haven't seen some of these folk in a long time, and I don't know if
they are still active.
Also, who amongst you would like to join app-backup to help with
maintaining these packages? Other developers are welcome as well, and
I've got a few bugzilla submitters in mind as possible recruits.

See:

there are 20 new packages with submitted ebuilds
as well as another 14 bugs with existing packages that have had no
recent correspondence.

Ok, so it took me a bit longer than planned to create this, but now
thanks to epkgmove, I have got the new category together. If there is
other stuff that has been added to the tree since this list was put
together, please drop me a note on it, and i'll move it.
There is also a request for new maintainers for the app-backup herd, to
help deal with the backlog of new packages.
