Ruby 1.8.1 will be available in the near future (I just committed ruby-1.8.1_pre2.ebuild) and I think it is the time to switch to 1.8. If users want ruby-1.6.8 along with 1.8.x they will be able to use both 1.6.8 and 1.8.x (since they have different SLOT now). We will concentrate on supporting packages for 1.8 from now on but keep 1.6.8 packages as well in case some packages may still be broken.
