I have an older machine that I wish to install Gentoo Linux on, but its BIOS
does not support booting from the CD-ROM drive. How can I make a boot
floppy for the install? Currently, there is no operating system on the hard
drive in the system, so I cannot access the CD from that computer.

Thanks for your help!

Just about any boot floppy will do, so long as it has drivers for your
network card, and chroot. I haven't tried it yet, but I bet Tom's rtbt
http://www.toms.net/rb/ will work.

I don't remember the error. just the line 'chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash'
didn't work. Just try it, maybe it will work now. It's half a year since I tried
it.

I used Tom's rtbt to install Gentoo with the 1.1a CD, it worked fine, had to change mount parameters to bind /proc though.

I don't see bash on the list of packages.... You probably have to change that
line to:

chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/ash

and use the ash shell instead of the bash shell.

maybe, this time I tried it it didn't work because of the missing driver
of the network card...
