A nice approach I recently saw to this problem on another mailing list
was they had somebody who *could* manually remove people from mailing
lists,
and they'd respond with something along the lines of "We've done this
for you now, but if anyone wants to do this, just email ...
blahblahblah+unsubscribe themselves".

That makes the effort less for the person requesting removal, and
reduces their margin of error.

Whether or not gentoo can/wants to do the same, eh.

Just when I saw it I though "Nice, this is waaay better then the
standard 'you did wrong, try again' ".

As a father of 3 kids, I'd say: if you'll teach while feeding, he would say 
"yes, I understand", but will not really study anything, and would *claim* you 
to feed him again next time...

Sure, that is a risk, but its kinda different with kids.

A smart person knows the benefit of knowing how to do a thing themselves.

If they ignore your teaching, and they don't learn the first time,
then its on them the second.

Sure, when "Teaching only" you have the advantage that they need to
participate in order to get their fish.

But a manipulative lazy learner could exploit the learning exercise to
get a fish, and then not actually learn anything, and still come back
to you the next time. ;)

Its a matter of knowing when you're being played, and then giving
restrictions in response to that.


Instead of .... assuming everyone to be lazy / uncaring / manipulative
before they've even had a chance.

And there's no way anybody can be commanded to provide this service,
its volunteer effort after all.

Just like there's no requirement anybody respond and teach them.

( And some people you can waste a lot of time on, trying to show them
the way, and they will still disappoint you, and some will promptly
forget after they get it right the first time, and require
re-educating a second .... while others, they require doing the thing
themselves at least once in order to learn )

And he would probably still mail the whole list the next time, because
it is easier for him than refering to the instructions he got last time.

The other, less popular option, is to just feed the man to the fish.  That also
solves the problem :)

Infra (at least me) _does_ do this, I just hadn't gotten to this
listmail yet, and I see that Tyler already removed himself.

We also flag all mails with the subject of 'unsubcribe' for moderation,
as they are usually people trying to remove themselves.

Actually, if the case was only to "not had full INBOX of gentoo", it was 
possible to just enable "sorting" and place gentoo-dev in separate IMAP-folder 
(like I did). But I guess, you've already unsubscribed, so nevermind ;)

Of course, to place gentoo in a separate IMAP-folder, you must actually 
/have/ an IMAP folder, which implies having an IMAP account, not, say, 
POP3, which seems to be what gets offered 'round here.[1]

Tho of course it's possible to sort local mail, as from POP3, into 
folders/directories too, as I do for various commercial lists and mailed 
notifications from wordpress, etc, tho not for community mailing lists 
like the gentoo lists.

For community lists I normally use gmane's list2news service, getting the 
lists as newsgroups, which I process using my favorite news client (pan, 
FWIW).

AFAIK, gentoo-dev is nothing more than a mailing list, and does little more
than take in messages, archive them, and then distribute them to list
members.  I don't believe that such things as IMAP or POP even apply in any
technical sense.
