Hi,

They were already masked, but because of

remove them in 30 days

This is not the first time that people report that "MSN is going to shut
down". So far, Skype itself is reported to use the MSN protocol internally
in the latest versions.

IMHO it would be better if the packages were removed because they don't
work with the current versions of MSNP supported by the servers than
because of a forbes article.

In fact, this article says "MSN Messenger is only available in mainland
China until then.". I have just connected two MSN Messenger accounts
through amsn 0.98.9 on gentoo and I successfully sent messages between
the accounts.

amsn seems to be working outside of china. You may want to reconsider
this mask for removal.

I filled bug 525100 about this
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=525100

This bug report should perhaps be expanded to include other packages
which are masked as part of the same "MSN service terminated" mask or
similar.

To clarify:

The maintainers (perhaps the net-im herd) *have* to remove these masks
on the MSN Messenger clients, because they don't make sense at all:

  # Markos Chandras <hwoarang@gentoo.org> (02 Sep 2014)
  # MSN service terminated.
  # You can still use your MSN account in net-im/skype
  # or switch to an open protocol instead
  # Masked for removal in 30 days
  net-im/kmess
  net-im/amsn
  x11-themes/amsn-skins

The MSN Messenger service (aka "Windows Live Messenger", ...) is still
working, and it has never been terminated. MSN Messenger can actually
even be used to chat (in text) with (some) Skype users without having to
use net-im/skype.

amsn is still working as expected, you can even create new accounts and
make them work with the MSN Messenger service using amsn. A few days
ago, I successfully sent messages between two MSN Messenger accounts
connected using amsn.
