Thanks to all who kept chiseling away at this issue - it's nice to see
that we still can get things done, even if it sometimes takes a week or
hundred more than initially planned.
I hope it all goes well!

From a user who has been following developments since the baselayout 1.13
era, with the bugs filed and ultimately fixed to prove it...
It really feels good to be this close, as for awhile I wondered if there'd
forever be that gap between ~arch and stable. It really did take a number
of people a monumental amount of effort to bridge that gap, and we owe
them a lot of gratitude for it, the more so as we see all that effort
paying off. =:^)
Thanks!

Excellent news, thank you for seeing this through.
I'm happy to report that openrc has been working pretty well for me :)

Openrc being so central to Gentoo, may I suggest a bigger campaign, on

I would be very interested in seeing some kind of list/review of all the
advantages of the new system. Idea for the Newsletter?

We should certainly get a news item together, since this is a huge deal
for Gentoo. Although no doubt non-Gentoo people will start laughing at
yet another "new" init system. =)
If there's a guide around already, or a blog post, or you want to draft
something, let me know and I'd be happy to polish it up.

There's a simple solution for that, we just have to include:
26 Mar 2008; Doug Goldstein <cardoe@gentoo.org>
-openrc-0.2_pre20080326.ebuild, +openrc-0.2.ebuild:
add OpenRC 0.2
25 Mar 2008; Doug Goldstein <cardoe@gentoo.org>
+openrc-0.2_pre20080325.ebuild:
add OpenRC 0.2 pre-release
23 Mar 2008; Mike Frysinger <vapier@gentoo.org> +metadata.xml,
+openrc-9999.ebuild:
Initial ebuild #212696.

1) It's a couple of years old now. :)
2) Having used it all that time on some systems, I don't see that many
superficial changes, or for that matter, deviations from the old init
system. I would rather think baselayout-2/openrc simply extends and
improves on baselayout-1.

Having used and watched the new version evolve, I agree, to a point. Yes
it's an extension of the old. But like that old tale of the frog in the
boiling water, I think more has changed than we may realize at first.
Or another way to put it: If it's so close to the old version, there
should be little protest in going back. But I know at least personally,
I've *NO* interest in doing that!
For one thing, /real/ parallel boot makes quite a difference! For
another, I remember baselayout-1's lack of real dependency based ordering
in early-boot, with the arbitrary ordered list of early-start services as
a substitute since it couldn't manage dependencies at that level.
But that said, it's a definite extension of the ideas found in
baselayout-1, indeed. Stable Gentooers should find much they already know
in the new system. It's certainly not the change that switching to
systemd, for example, would be.

Openrc is not just a gentoo init system; I know that at least
Alpine Linux [1] also uses it.

Thanks for the specific mention. I've seen "non-gentoo users" mentioned a
couple times in bugs, etc, but had no clue who that might be. Now there's
at least some idea.

also, we're still sitting on top of classical sysvinit, so i'm not sure openrc
technically qualifies as an "init" system. certainly not a "full" one.

That's true. Openrc is not really a full init system. It is a set of
init scripts, with a large part of its functionality written in c
instead of using shell scripts.
In light of this, I have s/init system/init scripts/ in the news item. I
will wait a few days and send it out again after I encorporate any other
changes that come from the list.

ll,
there was a regression in 0.8.1, so 0.8.2 is now the stable candidate.
I propose thatsince the differences between 0.8.1 and 0.8.2 are very
small, we should keep the news item date and stabilization date from my
original announcement.
- news item release on 5/1
- stabilization on 5/8.

How are docs doing? Is there a sample handbook update yet? I've not seen
much action on that bug, but that doesn't mean it's not happening behind
the scenes. Still, lack of news from that front has me worried.

Please, to avoid confusion, use month names instead of numbers or

Seconded. In fact,
has Gentoo not adopted the international standard date format ?
It is yyyy-mm-dd & sb used for all docs & discussions. So here it wb
news item release 2011-05-01

All,
The openrc stable candidate is now openrc-0.8.2-r1.
The changes between it and the previous stable candidates are small, so
the news item date and stable request date are still 2011/05/01 and 2011/05/08
respectively.
The more important part of this test is that we need some users to
migrate from baselayout-1 to openrc-0.8.2-r1 and be sure that is
successful.
As usual, let me know if there are any issues.

I'm willing to test. Is it as simple the news item says? If there is a
problem, can I simply go back to baselayout 1?
I'm amd64 by the way. I also have a older x86 machine if that would
help any.
Let me know.

I migrated a mostly-stable (so baselayout-1) amd64 server to
baselayout-2.0.2 with openrc-0.8.2-r1 (both stabilized through
packages.keywords), used etc-update and followed through the upgrade
guide. The reboot went without a hitch (etc-update was also quite
painless). Thanks for working on this, looking forward to getting this
everywhere!
Cheers,
Dirkjan
