What do you think about creating a new virtual package, icon-theme?
This would for example simplify the dependencies for
www-client/chromium, which currently uses this:
|| (
x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme
x11-themes/tango-icon-theme
x11-themes/xfce4-icon-theme
)
Also, possibly other icon theme packages in the tree could be added to that.
The suggested description would be "Virtual for desktop environments'
icon themes."
Suggested herd would be freedesktop.
What do you think?

Theoretically, any package that currently depends on gnome-icon-theme
should be able to depend on that since all those themes follow the fdo
standard for icon naming.

I think that the packages that currently depend on one icon theme, could
instead just depend on that virtual. For example, xfce works fine
without the xfce theme, provided some other theme (like gnome or tango)
is there.
Is it a requirement that more than one package should depend on it until
we can extract a virtual? I think it would simplify managing the
dependencies anyway.
Another question is, would the freedesktop herd want to maintain the
virtual?

This is very similar to when you want to add a global USE flag. In
that case we usually require 5 packages and a general non-specific
purpose. It can easily be translated to the present situation.
More practically I would say: use your brain. If you think it makes
sense then go for it.
Denis.

Hello fellow developers,
I would like to discuss the possibility to create a new virtual package
for all the icon-theme packages. According to this bug[1], it seems like
pcmanfm, and possible other applications too, require an icon-theme to
be present, no matter which one. So I think it would make sense to
create a new virtual package to include all the existing icon-themes.
++: Avoid ugly dependencies like || ( x11-themes/foo-icon-theme
x11-themes/bar-icon-theme ... )
- --: Not all packages include the same icons so users may end up with
missing icons for some applications. However, most icon themes should
include all the basic icons.

You could have USE flags for the virtual, so that some package could
depend on virtual/icon-theme[foo-icons], while the virtual depends on
foo-icons? ( || ( list of packages known to contain foo-icons ) )
Of course, this makes sense only if it is known or easy to find out
which icon-themes contain which icons.

I like the idea, anything that makes things work out of the box
without sacrificing options is welcome :)

since whatever gets added to the virtual should be at least almost up to
date with the spec, and provide the most common icons
virtual/freedesktop-icon-theme for name, just my opinion...

Don't you think that this is a bit overkill? Do you think that having
IUSE="ipod k3b quassel skype" is better than having no use flags at all?
I personally dislike the idea since most icon themes ( oxygen, gnome,
lxde, faenza, xfce(?) ) provide pretty much the same icons.

www-client/chromium isn't going to take this train. I was thinking about
something similar a few months ago but it turned out to be more complex
(the icon set used depends on the running desktop environment).
Anyway, if it's useful for other packages sounds good to me.

When running a DE you usually have an icon set lying around, the
problem usually shows up when you run a simple WM with random apps on
top.

I plan to go ahead with my proposal. I wont use any use flags for now.
Whoever feels this virtual is useful for him, he can use it, otherwise
you may skip it. I will send the virtual ebuild for review before I
commit it to portage tree.

Please review the attached ebuild. If you think that more icon-themes
need to be added let me know. Unfortunately these are the icon themes
that I was able to test so far.

nit: This is a typo, right? I guess repoman would still catch it, but
anyway.

++
virtual/freedesktop-icon-theme is a better name IMHO as it's what this virtual
icon theme actually is - theme compliant with freedesktop standard (so that
can be used by applications claiming support like chromium, KDE, Gtk apps),
not just some icon theme (as any instant messenger icon set would fall under
"some icon theme" category for instance).

Yes I will fix the name and the typo that was mentioned in another
reply. I will commit the virtual tonight.
