I had the exact same problem with kmail (as well as ssh). I tried several version of X and 4.0.2 seems to work fine. Again, this is maybe a very specific solution since my gentoo is running on a notebook. (IBM600E with Neomagic).

Hm. I've Xfree 4.1.0 here, latest portage revision (r5 I think). But again,
it worked before for a long time. I had Xfree-4.1 and kmail-2.2.2 and all the
same drivers except for the kernel (was 2.4.14, is 2.4.16) for a long time
and everything worked. I've also lived with this system for 2 days and it
never hung up until now.

If you have a thinkpad 600E (possibly other computers with Neomagic video) add:
        Option "XaaNoScanlineImageWriteRect"
        Option "XaaNoScanlineCPUToScreenColorExpandFill"
to your Section "Screen". Fixes kde crashing problems on my computer. I assume this is not a gentoo-specific issue. Hope this helps ya Jean-Matthieu (and anyone else who has a 600e on this list)
