Hi,

I'm looking to find one or more people to help out with 
gentoo-sources-2.6 maintenance (our primary supported kernel). Right 
now, me and Mike Pagano do most of the kernel work. I disappear fairly 
often and it's always good to have more than 1 active person on the project.

I'm looking for someone with at least:
  - Interest in kernel stuff, or a desire to become interested
  - Time to put towards the tasks
  - Enthusiasm to ask lots of questions rather than let stuff
    sit around
  - Basic experience with bugzilla
  - Basic kernel experience (i.e. you can compile your own)

Having knowledge of kernel internals or experience with kernel hacking 
are NOT requirements because if you have time, interest and ask a lot of 
questions then these will come anyway. A lot of the work doesn't involve 
technical stuff, plus I was certainly very clueless about all this when 
I originally got involved a few years ago.

Being an existing Gentoo developer is not a requirement. Most of the 
work is done on bugzilla and via email. This may be a good opportunity 
to get involved with development and later become a Gentoo developer for 
those that are interested.

It's an enjoyable task, you get to interact with a lot of very 
intelligent people upstream and you end up learning a lot.

Sorry for top post... it isn't my normal behavior.

I would be interested.  I have always compiled my own and I have time to 
help.  Best part is that I need an excuse to get back to working with 
gentoo again.

I'm not sure what sort of duties you are looking to have performed but 
I'll tell a bit about me.

I used to follow LKML for fun and to keep abreast of what was going on.
I know how to use patch -p1.
I've been a unix and linux admin for 7 years now.
I currently hold a QA position with a software company. I learned to 
submit good bugs from years of using open source and have familiarity 
with several bug tracking suites.  Bugzilla has changed some since I've 
used it but I'm sure I'll be able to pick it up quickly.

What else would you like to know?

Now I am interested on the work,

Simply introducing myself:
1. I have written several patches for vanilla kernel since 2.6.21,
mostly very simple,

2. I have experience writing gentoo ebuilds and have Bugzilla account
on bugs.gentoo.org, have contributed several ebuilds into sunrise

guys like me? Or you have one already?

I would like to go further in the Linux kernel internal comprehension.
Could someone tell me where to find a good starting free documentation ?

Most of the documentations I've found are about old kernel versions (2.4
series).

We're getting OT so preferably mail me directly rather than on-list if 
you wish to continue this, but briefly...

I've found the kernel coverage at Linux Weekly News, http://lwn.net , 
very useful.  There's stuff from beginner [1] up thru at least 
intermediate level and it's a well respected and oft quoted source, plus 
Jon Corbet, the primary editor, gets to (and covers) most of the various 
kernel related conferences as well.  He has a book out on Linux kernel 
2.6 drivers, as well.

There's also kernel newbies and other resources, but you'll find lots of 
links to follow at LWN and can go from there.

[1] As in I don't claim to do C code in userspace, let alone kernel, but 
can follow this coverage.  I do run the RCs and am starting into running 
the linus git master branch, after filing and git bisecting several bugs, 
so I'm progressing...

Thanks to this thread and the GMN, the response in my inbox has been 
positively overwhelming. I responded to everybody until a point, and was 
pleasantly surprised at how many people actually followed through with 
interest and enthusiasm (#gentoo-kernel is buzzing with new faces!!)

Anyway, I don't believe there are ever too many kernel maintainers, but 
the model I'm using is getting people to ask lots of questions and there 
are only so many people me and Mike can work with at once. So, I'm 
temporarily withdrawing this request for help while we get the current 
respondents more and more involved to the point where they can start 
answering their own questions.

But feel free to email me anyway and I'll add you to the list of people 
we contact when we have more capacity again.
