Hi guys,

here is a list of packages gnome herd would like to get rid of since
no-one seem to take care of them and users are not so verbose about it
either:

 * app-text/ggv https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=223427
 * net-news/straw https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=187285
 * net-news/logjam https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=181236

If no-one takes them, I'll proceed to package removal.

Upstream there was a discussion of interest. Pointing at random mail in
that tread:

So there are people which prefer ggv over evince...

This bug is already fixed since straw-0.27 is in the tree.

This are the cases where removal is not a best solution. straw and
logjam have upstream so it's better to move them into Sunrise: users who
use this packages could maintain them there... For ggv it seems that
it's better to leave it as is. May be just stabilize the most recent
version - let arch teams test it and if it works no need to remove it
from the tree.

Nothing more recent than that? 2 1/2 years ago seems pretty far away...

The last meaningful commit was done a little over 3 years ago...

ggv is a dead project. Upstream refused to fix performance issues I had
with it a few years ago. Evince is _now_ both faster and prettier (I
agree it wasn't true at first, ggv was much faster)

I'd rather we take ggv out of portage. We'd be doing our users a big favor.

We tend to prefer people contribute fixes before adopting. Furthermore,
given that you were retired for inactivity (#633142), and I don't see
any activity (bar a drive-by fix for app-office/magicpoint) even for the
packages you maintained up until that point, I'm disinclined to let you
proxy maintain this.

we'll then discuss this within proxy-maint.

manpages-l10n project:

So in the long term, we may consider dropping this package in favour of
app-i18n/man-pages-l10n[l10n_it]. I had filed bug 769017 for this some
time ago.

sci-libs/arprec

sci-libs/qd
sci-mathematics/genius
sci-mathematics/gsl-shell

sci-mathematics/reduce

fotoxx is now maintainer-needed. If anybody is interested, welcome. The 
upstream releases very often, a bump is needed.

All the other packages are now maintained by sci or sci-mathematics 
projects. If anybody is interested, please add yoursels as a maintainer. 
Maybe, gsl-shell and mathmod can be last-rited if nowbody takes them - I 
experimented with them a little but did not find them useful.

reduce is a very old version, hard-masked, non-working. reduce is a 
powerful and efficient CAS comparable with maxima. I use it quite often, 
but I compile new versions by hand, outside portage. The build system is 
terrible. If somebody could bump it to a modern version (an essential 
rewrite of the ebuild is needed), it would be excellent. Otherwise, we'll 
have to remove it :-(

One more appeal to the community. wxmaxima is used by many maxima users. I 
was not its formal maintainer, but in the past I did much work bumping it. 
The version in the tree is old (though working). The bump is urgently 
needed. The upstream has switched to cmake, and a nearly complete rewrite 
of the ebuild is needed.

I looked at whether these should be owned by the Python team, but I
don't think they should be. It looks like they're low-level utilities
that happen to be written in Python. As such, they probably shouldn't
even be in dev-python.
