I currently have 1GB of RAM with the 4GB HIMEM on 2.6.12-gentoo-r9.  I 
can play with it.

Sounds like it's time to upgrade ;-)

I can definitely do that on one of my days off work (Mondays and 
Tuesdays).  Shouldn't be terribly difficult with the newer, smaller 
patchset.
