Most things are committed, with the exception of the metabuilds. I'm still working on them. If you want to try it, you'll have to add a bunch of stuff to package.unmask. Then emerge xorg-server, then whatever drivers you want (look in x11-drivers/). If you do unmerge your xorg-x11 install, you'll probably have to emerge a few apps in x11-apps for things to work properly (xinit, xauth, iceauth, xhost, mkfontdir/mkfontscale, xkbcomp. You'll also want to grap xbitmaps, xkbdata and xcursor-themes from x11-misc. Currently, it will overwrite parts of your xorg-x11 installation. I purposely didn't set it to block yet so it would be possible to mix and match parts to help find breakages. If you find bugs that aren't purely ebuild problems, do not file them at bugs.gentoo.org -- go to bugs.freedesktop.org, in the xorg product. Two USE flags you will care about are "dri" and "glx" -- both are necessary to get accelerated 3D. The font-server flag may be necessary in libXfont, but I haven't fully explored this yet. If it turns out to be the case, it'll be removed as an optional flag and forced on. I will be re-adding a few patches; in particular, the customized startx/xinit stuff and the cursor paths (/usr/share/cursors and /usr/local/share/cursors), along with anything else I consider non-upstream material and worth my time.
