Maybe it's different in Germany, but here in the USA, the relationships between for-profit and not-for-profit organizations are highly regulated. IBM can (and has) given hardware or sold hardware at lower prices to educational institutions. IBM has made major contributions to the Open Source movement, in some cases even releasing IBM intellectual property to the community with very few restrictions. I live in Oregon, just a few miles from OSDL and a major IBM installation.
