[gentoo-dev] PHP unstable ?

PHP 5.0 was released a long time ago, and alot of fixes and patches were 
released after it to make sure it's sable.

According to PHP.net <http://PHP.net> the stable versions are PHP 5.0.4 && 
4.3.11
4.3.11 is marked stable, but 5.0.4 dosn't even exist on the tree.

5.0.0 isn't marked at all, and everything till 5.0.3-r2 is marked are hard 
masked and still being tested.

It's been like this for a long time now.

As a PHP developer I believe that 5.0.4 is more then stable, and should be 
added and marked stable.

I don't wanna override the system and install it manualy.

Quite a lot has changed between PHP 4.3.x and 5.0.x.  Apparently, things
like classes are totally different.  The classes in PHP 5 more closely
resemble Java than the ones in PHP 4.

AFAIK the changes broke quite a few applications, and so PHP 5 isn't
very backward compatable in that regard.

Having said that... is it possible to install both PHP4 and PHP5
simultaneously?  I'd like to tinker with PHP5, but I don't want to
sacrifice PHP4 in the process.

huh ? Horde for example works well with php5, and it's megs of object code.

there are problem with apache 2 and the usage of threads. Using it with
prefork apache MPM gived me NO problem (at least in the last 18 month).

"Works for me" is also not always an indication of whether something is
stable. "Works for lots of people" is better, but best is "doesn't not
work for anyone".

Well then as one of hopefully lots of people, let me chime in with a 
"PHP5 is working for me as well."  How is it developers determine if 
something's stable?  A lack of bug reports from those of us who added 
entries in our /etc/portage/ files?  Where do we report a lack of bugs 
to get these things pushed into the mainstream on Gentoo?

According to bugzilla, there are lots of open bugs (132 to be exact)
containing the word 'php' in the summary. From a quick glimpse many of
them seem related to php-5.

It's Gentoo policy not to mark a package ARCH unless it has been in
portage for 30 days with no open bug reports (not counting enhancement
requests).

If you want to help you can start by going through those bug reports,
coming up with solutions and patches.

Looks like your're 100% right. One user does not a stable release
make. The open PHP bugzillas seem to be roughly in three groups:

1.  Need testing with (pick one of a dozen major PHP addon packages).
Users could certainly help with this.
2. PHP5 ebuild problems (ebuild not working yet and/or dependancy
problems with other packages).
3. Actual failure to compile and/or run with certain packages.

I'm sure developers will eventually get to 2 & 3, but there are too
many bugs and too little time.

Since many of these bug reports aren't even assigned yet, I would say
that PHP5 is certainly not a stable package for Gentoo.

My $.02. Quichurbellyachin and get testing and debugging if you want a
stable release.

Fair enough.  And thank you for filling me in on the criteria for 
"stable".  Now, I'll just count myself as one of the lucky ones instead.

I'll go look into these open bugs, but I doubt I'll be in any position 
to contribute much to their closure.

What upstream call 'stable' and what actually is stable are two entirely
different things.
