This is for developers only. Should have mentioned that in the original email.

I already talked to Daniel about this, and he said he would add it.

Hourly. Why would you need to update it every five minutes? I could understand
30 minutes, but 5?

So I can see my blog entries show up on it without waiting around for
half of forever. More than 15 minutes is very annoying.
What's the rationale for having it happen less often? Maybe it's a major
drain on resources, but from my ignorant mind, it seems unlikely.
Has anyone checked with some other planet maintainers (e.g.,
planet.freedesktop.org, planet.gnome.org) to see how often they do it?

5 is ridiculous. I think 15 is a bit far-fetched too. You can suffer
the wait. Anything less than 30 is most likely a waste of traffic.

It is currently set to update every hour (xx:02). I personally think this is a
good enough delay, to avoid too much pointless traffic etc.
On the other hand, I was also wondering how regularly other planets update. If
anybody knows anyone in the know, please get me in contact.
How often is Planet Gentoo Experimental updating?

From my Apache logs, it seems to be once an hour, around xx:31.
I agree that once an hour is a very reasonable time, as Planet/0.2
fetches the page every time according to my logs, but I'm not certain if
this is because of the way I build my RSS feed.
I don't know if Planet includes 'If-Modified-Since' in it's requests.
If it does, then I think halving the time may be appropriate, as nearly
all requests will return only an HTTP header as the page has not
changed. The traffic and load in this case should be very small.

A quick look at the planet source code suggests that it does use those headers.

Would you like to get the site IP banned for abuse? RSS fetches at that
interval will get you blacklisted from some places.

Planet kde updates every 10 minutes. Taking a look at some other sites
it looks like 15 minutes is average wih 30 minutes being the longest
interval I've found.
Whatever interval you choose, maybe making it known on the front page
would be a good idea, like kde's warning:
"We update every ten minutes, so having your feed reader check more
frequently than that will just waste bandwidth.

I sure do. I'm mildly anal-retentive, however, so I like seeing that
things show up properly everywhere. It's kinda like committing something
to CVS and walking away before it hits rsync.

or committing something to cvs and wishing there was a link you could pull up
in viewcvs to give to users when closing bugs rather than waiting around for
30+ minutes for the changes to appear in viewcvs

Since when was that a Bad Thing(tm)? Faith in technology, I say. And if
the technology breaks, blame infra. :-P
I can understand about the CVS/rsync thing - it can be an 'important'
commit, but why in the heck would your blog have 'important'
information on it? If it does, shouldn't it be mirrored on -dev or the
pertinent list? Is our Planet going to become the primary means of
communication between developers? I sure hope not.

Great work!
I would *love* the website to be using a serif font for the blog
messages, as it noticeably eases reading of many lines of text.
Can we change this to be the default? If not, can we have it
as an option? Like http://planet.gentoo.org/?serif or something.
TIA.
