I have the symlink setup, however, the only file I have in there make.defaults. I think this make all stem back to the fact that I cannot run emerge rsync. Also, you need to do emerge --usepkg /mnt/cdrom/gentoo/packages/All/gnome-1.4-r1.tbz2 so that emerge knows to get dependencies from the binaries in PKGDIR.
