cow: Pronunciation Key (kou)
n.
1. The mature female of cattle of the genus Bos.
2. The mature female of other large animals, such as whales,
elephants, or moose.
3. A domesticated bovine of either sex or any age.
Idioms:
have a cow
See definition 3. Cows *can* be male because otherwise there's no name
for the kind of animal that the black and white male grass-eating thing
is. :) You can call them a "bull", but what kind of animal are they?
No, they're not "moos", they're cows. Even the males.
Best Regards,

Yes, but that's a plural noun. What's the singular form? And don't

well, for me and my purfeck englash.
cow = any gender
cow = female cow
bull = male cow
cattle = collection of any gender cows
unless you drink boddingtons beer, then things get very confusing!
(For the non uk beer drinkers - In the ad's they use a animated cow which goes out drinking,
one with the women ;-) etc, but its got an udder!)
so to answer your question. larry is a cow. (IMHO).
I'm new to gentoo, but why a cow? Ive got nothing against cows, its a very nice cow, just wondering if there is
a good story behind the decision.

Dont get me wrong. I *like* Gentoo Linux, it is simply the best Linux distribution I have come across, despite a few minor teething problems. (BTW: this is related to Larry, see the conclusion).
However, like many others who have expressed their thoughts, I too find the support to be lacking. Having fiddled for a few days trying to get php/imap to compile (works now, btw - Thanks Jared) I decided to fix it myself, and started playing with the ebuilds - I even submitted a new -r1 for uw-imap, which is now in the portage tree.
The one thing I didnt understand was the virtuals. I have found NO documentation on this anywhere, and it appears to have changed with Gentoo 1.0. Having a few old directories around from 1.0_rc6 only made it harder for me to understand, so eventually, having exhaused my options,, I joined the developer list and posted a detailed description of my problems.
No response.
A day or two later, I followed up, thinking perhaps I had confused people with all the information I had given, so I limited my post to a single simple quetsion on virtuals.
No Response
At that point I gave up, and figured it out myself (and I still dont understand it - I just have a better mis-understanding of virtuals now).
BUT, cast dispersions on Larry the Cow's sexuality, and the one guy who probably knows the answer to my questions better than anyone, posts 2 or 3 messages in a singe day - none of which include any information on Gentoo Linux.
Can you see my point?

I agree. What can be done about this? The gentoo-user mailing list is a
mess, and gentoo-dev is usually quiet. Also bugzilla has been useless in
the cases where I have tried to use it (ie no resolution). I think the
nature of gentoo, being very dynamic, makes it difficult to address
everyones individual and specific needs. When I used to be a mandrake
user I never used their mailing lists or forums, but with gentoo things
are so much in flux its impossible not to use them. One other thing I
would like to mention is the free-for-all style with which portage updates
are made. I dont ebuilds get tested enough before they go live.

I dont know Daniel or Todd but I think the statement wasn't meant to knock
anybody, I believe it was meant to bring out into the open a discussion
of some of the problems gentoo is facing as it grows (in userbase and
developers). I think we all want the same thing, a stable gentoo with a
strong base for continued growth.

Yes. This is what I intended. Im not knocking Daniel personally. I agree with Alastair - Daniel has done a marvelous job in concieving and bringing Gentoo to the point it is today. From what I have read he does seem to be very busy.
With Gentoo constantly changing (also understandable given its recent release) it is difficult to nail anything down. Things such as virtuals are not documented, and many of the ebuilds depend on them. I had to figure out the broken "virtual" stuff in the old (now fixed) php 4.1.2 ebuilds (pre -r7). I also had to figure out how to get squirrelmail to not want to install courier-imap given that uw-imap was already installed (this was due uw-imap having previously set virtual/imapUW instead of virtual/imapd).
As an end user, (despite my experience with Linux) I should not have to fix the internal workings on my own - especially for such a major problem (Im sure im not the only one who uses php), yet I got no response from anyone in the development team when I sought help. (other than a prior bug report from Jared, and his obvious work behind the scenes on the php ebuild) Yes, I know they're all busy, but when you need help with something that other end users (ie, the user mailing list) are not knoweledgable on, then you mail the developers.
I am concerned about the future of Gentoo Linux, especially with the goings on behind the scenes - Geert's departure from the development team, and other rumblings I have heard. Gentoo Linux is too good to lose, and the developers need to show that they are here, ready to answer the tough questions, and fix major problems.
Thankfully at least portage is GPL'ed so if the development team do tear temselves apart, someone can continue to maintain it, because portage is the heart of Gentoo Linux.

Hi!
I've just found out about Gentoo Linux. This could be one of the most
important developments in Linux distribution and installation for...... well
.... a long time anyway! As soon as I can get my old P2 350MHz PC back off
my son I'm going to give Gentoo a go!
Just one thing..... Larry the cow? Cows are female! No wonder he's
frustrated!
Be seeing you!

Since this is the second time around, I suggest we just change it to

Though I haven't seen it mentioned. If Larry has been castrated, we could

How about, "Larry, who fights for bovine freedom, and holds his large head high" ?
He was a scrawny calf, who looked kind of woozy, no-one suspected he was carrying an Uzi.

Regards
Gavin

Wow, you're right. I was about to argue with you but decided to follow
my own advice and look it up first. According to the Oxford dictionary
it's a female bovine at least one year old that has given birth.
So, is there a non-sex implying term other than bovine? I can't find
one.

I was thinking singular like cow.

You may have but that doesn't stop the curiosity of others.

Some months ago we agreed upon the fact that cow both is the name of the
bovine species, and the name of a female member of that species.
Now, stop cluttering my mailbox with this pointless discussion. If you're
interested, check the archives.

There is a tiny mistake on your page regarding Larry The Cow.
"until he tried Gentoo Linux."
If Larry is a cow, Larry must be a female. So
"until he tried Gentoo Linux."
should be
"until she tried Gentoo Linux."
Good luck with the project.

This has been discussed a million times before, cows can be male, ask any farmer.
