hia,
see http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5578 etc.
if you would like to test it:
1.) extract
http://www.icu.unizh.ch/~mettlerd/gentoo/files/FlightGear-0.7.10_gentoo_3in1.tgz
to /usr/portage/
2.) do an "emerge -p FlightGear" and an "emerge FlightGear"
(build time around 30 min on my 1 ghz athlon)
3.) execute "fgfs &" (window mode) or "fgfs --enable-game-mode &"
(fullscreen game mode) -> man fgfs
enjoy your flight! ;)

dan
ps.
* make sure that your opengl compliant graphics card is set up
properly. i only tested it with nvidia's driver (geforce 2 gts)
but it should work with mesa too.
* would be great if others could submit some additional scenery,
aircraft etc. ebuilds to http://bugs.gentoo.org!
* disclaimer: you test it at your own risk, no warranty at all.
however, on my box it works great :)
* feedback is welcome (especially regarding different hardware,
ppc, sparc, gcc 2.95)

It seems the source URI is broken (or the site isn't accepting ftp logins)

It only allows 7 logins. I got lucky and managed to grab the SimGear
source, now I just have to wait for FlightGear to download (over 30 MB!)

I've decided to temporarily mirror the file. Try not to hammer it _too_
hard, it's only a 256 Kb ADSL line (not sure of the uplink speed).
http://206.40.110.177/SimGear-0.0.18.tar.gz

Oh, forgot to mention: The other files can be grabbed from the mirror at
ftp://ftp.darklands.cx/pub

hmm.. the sim/flightgear ftp servers seem to be a bit "gentoo'ed"
atm ;)
thus, first try to emerge the things as usual, then try a manual
download of the tarballs from a close mirror: see
http://www.simgear.org/mirrors.html (SimGear-0.0.18.tar.gz) and
http://www.flightgear.org/mirrors.html
(FlightGear-0.7.10.tar.gz, fgfs-base-0.7.10.tar.gz)
if you still do not succeed, try these temporarily mirrored files
(by http. please be kind to that server, it has only ~10 kbit/s
upstream. else i will need to remove the files.):
http://www.icu.unizh.ch/~mettlerd/gentoo/files/SimGear-0.0.18.tar.gz
(1.3 mb)
http://www.icu.unizh.ch/~mettlerd/gentoo/files/FlightGear-0.7.10.tar.gz
(1.1 mb)
http://www.icu.unizh.ch/~mettlerd/gentoo/files/fgfs-base-0.7.10.tar.gz
(30 mb, base files.. relax, there's no compilation required ;)
put them in /usr/portage/distfiles and emerge.
nb. if you have a slow internet connection it's probably a good
idea to download and emerge the files/ebuilds step-by-step (as
successful builds of metakit, simgear and some more are
_required_ for building flightgear):
emerge -p SimGear
emerge SimGear
(eventually download required tarballs manually)
if it succeeded:
emerge -p FlightGear
emerge FlightGear (takes a while)
(eventually download required tarballs manually)
have fun
