I don't know if the problem was already discussed here, but i want to
propose a possible solution. The problem is that gnome related stuff
requires gdk-pixbuf to be compiled with gnome (gnome-libs) support.
But i think the problem is not in the gdk-pixbuf ebuild. In fact you
could use a optional gnome support in gdk-pixbuf with use value. Later,
looking in /var/db/pck/...../RDEPEND and USE you could easily see the
REAL package dependency. So the gnome ebuild should look if gdk-pixbuf
was compiled with or without gnome-libs support, and require it to be
re-emerged with gnome support if necessary.
Looking to RDEPEND and USE files could also easily solve two other
problem: re-emerging packages that depend on a library when it is
upgraded / unmerged or unmerge these packages when they can't be
compiled without the package that has been unmerged.
One last suggestion: i thing it should be easy to implement, and very
usefull, to see what use value are involved in meging a specific package
(and if they are included (ex: gnome) or excluded (ex: -avi) ).
Bye

This is being solved with a more general solution with the recent versions
of Portage. Packages will now be able to depend on others being compiled
with specific useflags. That will solve this (and a good many other)
problems very cleanly.

However, thanks for your suggestion. We really appreciate any contribution
to solve these pesky, long-standing problems.
