Hello, what is the appropriate method to unmerge and merge glibc? When I
tried to well um it broke everything almost it could not deduce the who was
the root, and lost control of the system. I really like the package but the
distro and package system are unfamiliar turf for me.

ebuild glibc-2.2.2-rx.ebuild merge does the job.Take a look at the
ebuild scripts pkg_preinst and pkg_postinst
functions. ld-linux.so.2 and libc.so.6 first get copied to tmp and
symlinked to /lib. Then the new glibc
gets installed on your running system.
After that the symlinks get changed to the libs installed by the new
glibc package.

If that step is finished you can savely unmerge the old glibc version
from your system (if you used an other
version for example glibc-2.2.1) using
ebuild /var/db/pkg/sys-libs/glibc-2.2.1/glibe-2.2.1.ebuild unmerge. That
only removes the stuff that remained from your old glibc.

bye achim~

To quote a previous post to this list:
--------------------------------------
Add to your /etc/make.conf the following line . It should be one line, not
two and have a space between the two URLs:

GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://www.ibiblio.org/gentoo
http://cfx5.tgv.net/mirror/gentoo"

and try again. Basically it will try ibiblio first and then try cfx5.

Heya..

Just writing to say how attractive Gentoo linux is. I personally havent
tried it out (yet), but a system which implements a BSD-type ports
system has to be good!

Anyway, the real reason why I am writing, is because I added a blurb
about Gentoo on my site, unixresources.org. the link is here:
http://www.unixresources.org/gentoo.phtml

I just wanted to let you know, and if there's anything you'd like
changed (because of intellectual property or anything), please feel free
to email me.

Thanks.

I don't know if you are the right person, or if there are FAQs somewhere, but I seem to be stuck with my PCMCIA controller.

I was able to get to stage 3 using the CD, and then compiled the kernel without any problems and made sure to have PCMCIA support. However, when I got to code listing 34 (well, right before it), it states:

If you have a PCMCIA card installed, have a quick look into /etc/init.d/pcmcia to verify that things seem all right for your setup, then add Code listing 34

The /etc/init.d/pcmcia is blank, and I didn't know what to add to it. I have continued on, but have no networking support.

Could you point me in the right direction to add networking support? I am looking forward to trying out this distribution.

Thank you.

Chip

The PCMCIA documentation is a little lacking (blame me). I posted a PCMCIA
howto a couple of weeks ago

http://lists.gentoo.org/pipermail/gentoo-user/2002-March/007488.html

Basically, you probably want to unconfigure pcmcia in your kernel, install
it, and then emerge pcmcia-cs.

You shouldn't need to bother with /etc/init.d/pcmcia; the configuration
settings are in /etc/conf.d/pcmcia.

Daniel,

Do you know if our SDK will run on Gentoo?

If so, I have no problems plugging it to developers.

Thanks!

Where is your SDK?
What requirements does it have? (some odd library versions?)
and, what license? (matters more to me personally than to the rest of
Gentoo, I think. I'm not inclined to sign NDAs ..)

Generally, if it runs on other linux-distributions it ought to run on
Gentoo.

I want to get involved, and I want gentoo to take over the world!

Can some one lead me to documentation on how to make ebuilds?
Is there a list of packages that need maintainers?

Actually this:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/gentoo-howto.html
would be even better start (he has to write it first, right?) ;).

David: you will also want to look at:
http://bugs.gentoo.org (and get an account there).
This is a bug and new/updated ebuild repository which contains all what you
are looking for.

George

Hi,

I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Mark Dierolf, and I decided to join
this list because I want to help out more with gentoo development. I've
written about 20 or so ebuilds, most of which are sitting in the bug tracker,
and a few others which are in portage, such as
net-misc/balance net-misc/pen net-misc/ccxstream

I currently work for www.financialcontent.com, where we run a total of about
40 gentoo server. We automate almost all of our server maintenance using
ebuilds. I'm currently working on creating a software package which will
simplify set up & administration of network boot thin servers. I'm also doing
testing and bug fixing for the AMD64.

Anyway, didn't want to waste a ton of mailing list bandwidth and brag that I
get to work with gentoo all day, just wanted to introduce myself :)

Thanks,
Mark Dierolf
