Like I mentionned before, that's probably what gentoo require today. 
Once you have a distro on CD where it can process with some of those 
steps automatically you'll still get new users just because of the 
portage way of doing things.

And with the documentation available on the web site, someone may get to 
install gentoo without that much knowledge.
