I have exactly the same problem as you:

  /usr/src/linux-2.4.17/include/net/sock.h:739: size of array `__pad'
is  too large

I get it with various kernel version 2.4.9 ... 2.4.17, many different 
kernel-options settings (minimal to typical),  under Suse 7.3,
Inspiron 8100.

Have you been able to solve the problem?
