Looks like ext2 was not *built into* the kernel. If you used a gentoo
kernel-sources, and you weren't careful when doing make config, it is
very likely that you left the default, which is ext2 support as a
module. If you used the gentoo kernel package (binary), then that is
definitely your problem.
