hi !
i'm really stuck !
did a bootstrap with the rc6 using the iso-image,
which i enhanced with a snapshot of my portage-tree.
the bootstrap worked fine.
then i edited packages to my needs.
but emerge --pretend system keeps telling me
that it's about to merge things like xfree -
and that's just plain ridiculous for a base system.
so, do i have to merge everything by hand in order ?
any clues ?
thanks and ciao
peter

It is most likely your USE flags. I know for sure that "tex" will cause
xfree to be built, but based on some recent comments I have seen, there
may be another offending flag as well (maybe a new package in system for
rc6 that has a conditional dependence on xfree?).

I too find it a bit distracting that xfree is merged as part of the base
system. I do not however see how we can have xfree not be installed if the
use flags claim some of the apps should be compiled with x11 support.
Did we get some DONTUSE functionality yet ?

We traced down the xfree-in-base-system problem a few days ago. The culprit
was gpm. The problem is afaik fixed on cvs.
