Hi everyone,
I've just made a bunch of packages for libogg, libvorbis, libao,
vorbis-tools, cdparanoia, abcde, id3, and cd-discid, so you can start
ripping your cds now :) I've emailed them to Achim, so they should be
in portage soon.

Hi,
I was having some problems w/ media-libs/tiff-3.5.5-r2, so I made
tiff-3.5.5-r3 and fixed it up a bit. I also added netpbm-9.10 to
media-gfx. Right now I'm working on packages for fvwm and icewm, they
should be done within a couple of days.

What was the problem?

netpbm is in media-libs already. :-)

Looks like you did not commit it yet.

Well, when I merged it, it didn't use ${D}, but instead installed
everything to /usr/local/..., so nothing got registered in the
CONTENTS file.

Wow, I dont feel too smart right now... :) I guess I expected to see
it in media-gfx, since it doesn't really provide any libraries that
can be used by other packages... I *do* think media-gfx is a better
place for it, tho...

Strange here it works perfect.

Not right it includes libs (libpbm libppm libpgm libpnm)

Right, but thess libraries can't be used by other packages.... They're
only there to reduce the amount of duplicated code between the
hundreds of utilities that are included in the package. I don't know
of any packages that link to these libraries, and no header files are
installed by netpbm, so I don't know how you could get the prototypes
for the functions in the libraries anyways... And imagemagick provides
libraries, but its in media-gfx...
I realize this is really picky, but I think there should be
consistency within the tree :)

The problem was that I forgott to commit confi.site-3.5.5-r2.
Now it should work.

gocr uses this libs. Thats why I added it.

I thought we disscussed the media-libs issue. We will change it but for now
I
think we should place such stuff to media-libs because the other image libs
are in there too.
True imagemagick and gimp provide libs too but in opposit to netpbm they
offer a GUI interface
that's why they are in media-gfx.

I changed confi.site-3.5.5-r3 to install man pages in /usr/share/man
instead of /usr/man.

Ok, I'm gonna remove media-gfx/netpbm, but I'd like to make my version
netpbm-9.10-r2, since I put the extra data stuff in /usr/share/netpbm,
rather than /usr/lib/netpbm, since its just data and not executable
stuff. And the Makefile.config for r1 doesn't give all the proper
paths for the include files and libraries for libpng, jpeg, & tiff. Is
that ok w/ you?

Pete,
You're right this time... media-gfx is the correct location for netpbm.
Go ahead and get it moved over there (take a look at the original netpbm
ebuild and add any improvements to your own). Next time, just remember
to do a:
# cd /usr/portage
# find -iname netp*
...before starting :)

OK, now that I read all the emails, netpbm and imagemagick could go either way.
Achim can make the final decision.

They exist in our portage tree as ebuilds. We are primarily a ports-based
distribution (meaning that we provide scripts and a special system (Portage) so
that you can build apps from sources). We generally only build binaries for
releases and snapshots.

I would love to see emerge or some other script tell me after an rsync
when I have new packages. I dont care about updates, emerge -up
system/world will show me that. But I would love to know when new
packages actually exist, things that I didnt have available before. So
far I only have 1 thing running on my main gentoo server that wasnt an
ebuild and therefore isnt fully integrated into the whole portage "scheme
of things". I would like to keep it that way. Getting notified of new
apps I have available when I rsync would be great.
