[gentoo-dev] mod_php 4.3.x merge issues?

I'm maintaining about five gentoo boxen of various x86 persuasions. Over the last several weeks I've encountered identical build problems across the board with merging mod_php. The error I'm encountering is:

checking for fopencookie... yes
configure: error: can not run test program while cross compiling
 
!!! ERROR: dev-php/mod_php-4.3.2-r4 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 320, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed

When the system checks are executing. Obviously I'm not cross compiling, so I'm unsure what is triggering the error. Am I alone in encountering this error? Anyone have any ideas?

I've got a box with this problem too. I've solved it in the past with an
emerge -e mod_php, to force a rebuild of all dependencies, but I haven't
taken the time to do that yet on this box.

Here's the 'emerge info' for the box with the problem...

first. Then php should install ok.

There is also a lot of information about this problem on the forums. In 
particular:

There's some 'creative' fixes in there as well, but as max suggests, a 
re-emerge of libwww is the quickest. (A revdep-rebuild would catch this as 
well.) I've also found that removing the 1.x series of apache installs makes 
things much nicer. Someone has taken great pains to let apache1 and apache2 
run side-by-side in portage, but you might find that just using apache2 is 
remarkably painless.

This fixed it for me! Thinks for the tip. I could have sworn I ran
revdep-rebuild on that machine, but maybe not.

The revdep-rebuild in gentoolkit before 0.1.30 didn't work 100% in
getting the entire rebuild done properly. In 0.1.30 the only thing
it doesn't catch is libwww sometimes, but only because libwww has a
circular dependancy with MySQL via one of MySQL's dependancies.
