Team,

Its my 18th anniversary of installing Gentoo. A number of coincidences gave rise to
my original liveCD turning up when I was searching for bits to get an old system to boot
just one more time to get some forgotten data off its hard drives. I just had to try it out.

Anyway, one thing lead to another and now I have a 2003 Gentoo install as a Virtualbox
guest https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:NeddySeagoon/Historical_Gentoo all except 10
files. It boots, GNOME and KDE run, it won't play blurays but it has a few bits missing,
so its not quite original.

Here's where I reed your help. The missing distfiles are

MD5 0d9151faa28fcbdff6b37559ce4895f5 kdegraphics-3.1.1a.diff.bz2
MD5 38adc94a4953a6b29e8619c25dda4887 4.2.0-4.2.1.diff.gz 54763

MD5 d5cc6a93c7d3ad2eb02bc637a1de9cf3 net-tools-1.60-gentoo-extra.tar.bz2 5785

If your Gentoo history goes back as far as mine and you still have those files, please
share them with me.

I regret that I did not understand GNU/Linux back in 2003 to help you.
This is indeed a cool project to celebrate your 18th anniversary of
Gentoo ;) Please share some videos after you finish that.

Benda,

It works now, its just not quite authentic. Follow the instructions in
the wiki page I linked, or if you can't wait, there is a link to a root
filesystem image for Virtualbox. I have hosted all the source files I
have found, so go ahead and do a 2003 stage1 install.

KDE is 3.1.1 not 3.1.1a

pam_login is 3.11, not 3.10.

net-tools-1.60-gentoo-extra.tar.bz2 I had to remake, based on the
comments in the ebuild. The file size and md5sum don't match but I used
2021 tar to put the bits together.

XFree is there, just not the version portage wanted to install.

You beat me by 6 mth . I had recently built my 2nd machine
& had been using Mandrake in the 1st, but they were slow with their release.
I tried Suse + Slackware, but couldn't get them set up properly,
so I thought I might as well try that new thing people were talking about.
I followed the install instructions faithfully, booted
& found myself with a working version of Gentoo ! I've never looked back.

I still have the original CDs for Mandrake from 2000, my 1st Linux,
but I've never tried installing them again anywhere.

I am a little earlier with gentoo  - but unfortunately I don't have any
media/machines from that era - great project!  I started with Redhat 4.0
sometime in the late 90's.

I am reasonable certain that I have an archive with the others, but it's
a media accessibility problem: they are stuck on either an LTO1 or LTO3
tape, and while I have an LTO drive that might work, I don't have a
suitable external SAS controller on hand. It should probably be a
project for me to media-shift those old backups onto cloud storage.

Your screenshot with OpenOffice has given me an idea :)
I could add things to the basic install I have now but every time I
do that the download Virtual Box disk image gets bigger, however,
that would make sure I had the sources.

You need to update that 2009/2010 Gentoo.
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:NeddySeagoon/HOWTO_Update_Old_Gentoo
That page needs to be cleaned up now that CVS has gone.

All tho old Gentoo stuff I have is available over http.

Robin,

Thank you.

I have a similar media problem with a pile of 5 1/4" floppies. A have a
drive that reads all the 5 1/4" formats and a motherboard to connect it
to ... until I replace this 12 year old system.

USB to Floppy interfaces won't do it as they are all made for the data
rate used in 3 1/2" floppies.

Maybe I'll just move this system along my desk and put it under my
APPLE ][ :)

But with this. Look at these projects:

And these ready-to-buy products:
