Would it be possible to run a service that sends a 302 for the
distfiles/foo-1.tar.gz to the appropriate bucket such that manual
fetching doesn't require to calculate the hash?

I prototyped this myself for distfiles.prefix, and seems like a nice
guesture for at least the transition period?
