See below, I'm grateful for any improvements.

As there is a pending security bug, I'd like to commit this news item on
Sunday 2013/6/30 12:00 UTC and immediately afterwards request cups-1.6
stabilization.

Title: Printer browsing in net-print/cups-1.6
Author: Andreas K. Huettel <dilfridge@gentoo.org>
Content-Type: text/plain

Display-If-Installed: <=net-print/cups-1.6.2-r5

net-print/cups-1.6 no longer supports automatic remote printers or
implicit classes via the CUPS, LDAP, or SLP protocols, i.e. "network
browsing".

The browsing functionality can be restored by running cups-browsed
from net-print/cups-filters as a separate daemon (just add its init
script to your default runlevel). By default cups-browsed uses the
net-print/cups-1.5 browse protocol, but it can also utilize zeroconf
(if the zeroconf use flag is set). See /etc/cups/cups-browsed.conf
for configuration.

Of course, directly specifying the location of your printers in
the cups interface works as well.

basically the functionality got split in a stand alone daemon?

Basically the functionality got dropped by Apple (cups upstream) in favour of
zeroconf, and re-implemented in an extra package maintained at the Linux
Foundation.

Other stuff moved that way as well, e.g. the serial and parallel port backends
are not in cups proper anymore, as well as the filters for direct printing of
image formats or the Perl and PHP bindings. We (as everyone else in the Linux
world) pull in cups-filters as a PDEPEND of cups now, so nothing changes in
effect- which is why this all need not be mentioned in the newsitem.

Note that <=cups-filters-1.0.34-r1 has several regressions from cups-1.5
A couple of them which involve postscript documents and/or postscript
printers have been fixed in bzr and should be part of the next release.

I'm also working on additional improvements I hope to see in the next
release of the filters.
