One thing that I should explain -- Portage isn't *just* a ports tree. We use
it to build the entire Gentoo Linux distribution. Unlike FreeBSD, all the
stuff you would normally find in /usr/src is modularized and included in the
Portage tree. So, the fine-grained configurability and flexibility you expect
from ports is available at all levels; for example, you can build a Gentoo
Linux system with or without readline or gettext support. slang and PAM can
also be toggled on or off at build-time. Not only that, but we also support a
special feature called "system profiles". Basically, it allows *you* to define
what the distribution will look like.

So, if you'd like to use Portage, I have a suggestion. Rather than
incorporating Portage into your personal distribution, why not incorporate your
personal distribution into Portage, and thus Gentoo Linux? That way, we can
have a special "weichert" system profile can can be used to build a Gentoo
Linux system that's set up exactly the way you like it. In effect, it would
still be your own customized distribution, but it would exist as an option for
all Gentoo Linux users, allowing others to use the "weichert" profile if they
so desire.

By doing so, we'd be able to benefit from one another's work. You'd gain
access to our 700 or so up-to-date packages, our gcc-3.0 build testing, new
kernels, bug fixes, Portage improvements, etc. etc. and we'd benefit from your
improvements to the Portage tree, your system profile(s), and of course your
ideas, suggestions and friendship :) The one sacrifice you would need to make
is that you would be committing to work in a team (rather than individual)
development environment. I think this would be the best arrangement, since
then you'll have a voice in the future of Portage development. And if you're
going to base your distro around Portage, you really should be working closely
with us.

Best Regards,

Hi,

The part with the profiles sounds great, im working at a danish ISP,
and i think ISP's need a distro like gentoo, because it's (can be)
a striped down linux. And a default isp profile would be great.
(with sshd as the only service to listen)

I know this is a hackers distro, but what about som info on the USE var's,
im not sure what all of them do.

USE="slang readline gpm berkdb gdbm tcpd pam libwww ssl
# lm_sensors lvm pcmcia-cs alsa
# nls mmx mitshm
# esd lcms gif sdl vorbis ogg
# gnome gtk X qt kde motif opengl mozilla"

Best Regards
Heine Andersen

This info will be available in the next day or two. I'm about to revamp
our USE system so that it's modular, and you can do things like:

USE="cpu(mmx,sse,3dnow) php(*) gnome(*) X(mitshm)"

Basically, we will be adding fine-grained USE functionality in the next
couple of days because the USE variables are growing so rapidly. This
system will also be backwards-compatible with our old system. I'll post
lots of docs on this as I begin redesigning things.

Best Regards,

Hey devs, and hopefully fellow devs before long.

Just joined this list as suggested on irc and I'm going to be lurking for
awhile to see what you guys actually do every day.

Carry on.

Hello Raymond!

Actions speak louder than words or silence, while I welcome you to lurk
the conversations we have you may be more interested in trying to do
some of our activities instead; you can find a short list of them at

http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/How_to_contribute_to_Gentoo

If you have any questions regarding any development matters; feel free
to leave us a question, preferably in one of the dev rooms on IRC. The
mailing list is more focused on discussions regarding ideas, uncertain
and conflicting matters and other developer issues.

Have fun!
