Sure, I cannot buy it anymore. But what about people who already own it
and would like to re-emerge it or migrate it between PCs?

Easy, just copy the ebuild and any patches in the files subdir to a
local overlay.

That is one of the reasons things are masked for at least 30 days before
removal. To give affected people some time to deal with it however they
want.
We can't be expected to keep old stuff around forever :/

Which brings us back to the old discussion on what good it does for one
person to do the work of masking and removing and N persons to do the
work of creating an overlay instead of just letting the package rot in
the tree until it is actually broken. But I guess everyone's pretty
tired of that discussion so let's leave it at that.

I'll say the same thing I've said in the past; it doesn't look like
anyone in the dev community is interested in it. There is nothing
preventing anyone from doing it; so feel free to set it up and show us
up!

Or N^4 people downloading ebuilds which serve no purpose whatever. That
stacks faster than you think.

That seems more like an argument for not having non-free (as in beer)
proprietary software in the tree at all.
I have mixed feelings on this particular removal. I'd probably leave
it there until it is actually broken, but the problem with stuff like
this is that it is almost impossible to tell if it actually is broken,
since none of the devs have access to the distfiles. As a result it
probably makes sense to be more aggressive about treecleaning non-free
software if it doesn't have an active maintainer.
