[gentoo-dev] Increasing contributions and interest via personal project aggregation

Hi all,

I'm sure I'm not the only one with a number of projects I'll never get
to, but I'd really like them to happen anyway. I suggest we create some
sort of page that aggregates all of these personal projects together, so
anyone can browse through them and look for stuff that sounds fun.

The goal is to increase contributions from outside by giving them a
ready list of projects of all sizes and difficulty levels to work on,
projects that go beyond what happens at Bugday. Further, it could also
help current Gentoo developers who are bored or have lost interest in
what they're doing by helping them to find somewhere new to contribute.

Great idea!

I hope I don't break down religious discussions, but I pretty much like
what I see from Ubuntu's Launchpad, which handles so callled  
"Blueprints",
see for example:
   https://blueprints.launchpad.net/soyuz/+spec/personal-package- 
archives

Unfortunately, Launchpad is not yet open sourced completely, some code
lies around here: https://launchpad.net/launchpad

As registering a project at the launchpad.net service is not an option
for Gentoo, any other idea for a good management of ideas that
includes comments, assignments, filtering, etc?

Hi!
I really like that idea. Maybe I'd do more than the occasional ebuild in 
bugzilla if it already was implemented ;)
I'd like to see such a thing - maybe not only for gentoo related stuff but for 
linux/programming in general.

And I for one would give it a go and try and find something that suites my 
level of skill and intrest. So I'm would say please make it happen (anything 
I can do to help?).

I expect to have this implemented by next week.

The premise is each dev writes some ideas down in
~/public_html/ideas.xml, yes it's xml, cry me a river.  It makes it really
easy to transform in a nice shiny webpage for people to view.

A sample entry is at
http://dev.gentoo.org/~antarus/ideas/ideas.xml?passthru=1

Postprocessed it would look something like:
http://dev.gentoo.org/~antarus/ideas/ideas-index.xml

I have a script that will basically combine everyones idea.xml file
into 1 big index that will get copied to the webnodes (just like
devaway) and get served there.

Things that need to be finished:
Finalize the xsl for the transform, make the html less ugly.
Finalize the ideas.dtd
Confirm that CVS is a bad place for ideas.xml files
Finish up the cronjob and bribe someone in infra to turn it on
Give the xsl and dtd's to Neysx and bribe him to commit them to cvs.
Maybe write some xsl to do blog-like pager stuff if we get a lot of
ideas (too many to fit on a single page).

The dtd and a custom guide.xsl are also in my webspace in the ideas/
directory, if anyone is interested in looking.
