Caleb,
I'm going to add myself to the Ruby herd, if I can ever get infra- to get
off their asses and put my keys back up on the servers. I had a total data
loss in the last couple weeks, and had to rebuild.
question... gem is the "official" package manager for Ruby. Why do we put
Ruby stuff, other than the bare minimums to get Ruby running, in the portage
tree? Why not just let gem handle it?

Okay. I have to apologize gentlemen. I will take my lumps. I said this out
of frustration. There, it's out. Someone had been trying to help me with
this, and he's on vacation... and other's know about it but haven't done
anything. It seems like a simple procedure to put keys on a server, but
it's taking forever to get it done. That being said, I have NO desire to
start yet another argument on the lists.
I apologize. Now I'm going to go and bury my head in the sand somewhere.

Here's a (probably bad) idea, but, how about we do something like the
way g-cpan does things. It's just an idea, and, I really don't have a
clue as to how g-cpan actually works. *shrugs*

Actually, g-gem for gem-based packages is already being worked on by pclouds
and Aggelos Orfanakos.

I favor this the same way I favor pear and pecl to handle those
extensions. But to each his own I guess... Aaron and I will have our own.

It makes sense to put gems into Portage if they are deps for other
packages, or (in the case of something like mongrel) if they're an
important package in of themselves.
If we had the man-power (which we don't), I'd favour having ebuilds
for as many gems as possible. When you're managing servers, it's very
nice to be able to audit your server against what the package manager
says should be there :)
Best regards,
Stu

Do you have any instructions for me Caleb? Shall I continue by picking
up bugs and doing the usual stuff or do you have something else in mind?

Caleb,
I run KDE at work and I search through bugs sometimes when I'm there. I
can try to wrangle some bugs for you guys and fix them. I can't promise
to be too active though. But I'd gladly help out.

I was looking for an excuse to learn Ruby. I'll help all I can.

No quizzes yet. When I've put calls for help before I find that we
usually get a lot of responses and then a lot of people quickly fizzle
out. I wanted to at least get through that round before we start going
through the ebuild quiz process. I'll be sure and send people your way
though!
Thanks,
Caleb
