The media-sound/alsaplayer package is pending removal as requested by 
security@g.o for multiple buffer overflows [1], dead upstream [1] and a crash 
occurring when playing uLaw/AU Audio File [2].

The package is currently masked and is pending removal on 15th September.

I don't know if it's appropriate since I never used alsaplayer, but
mpeg123 is a good player for "Just play me this file on a console
without much hassle". Other candidates would include mplayer and mpd.

he meant mpg123 (as-is), and/or mpg321 (gpl2), not mpeg123...

FWIW, I've dealt with the problem as well (altho I have arts, its age is
showing and it gets broken with some versions of KDE), so I know the
frustration.  An idea I haven't tried but which popped into my head as I
was reading your post... what about creating a simple shell script that
looks at the file it's handed and determines whether to call ogg123 or
mpg321 or whatever, based on extension or what "file" thinks it is?

Fortunately arts and the built-in events player are working for me ATM,
but I may try this next time something breaks.

...  Looking forward to KDE4 and getting rid of arts!

BTW, alsaplayer is in the proaudio overlay now.

It is 2 versions, a -r5 with the last Debian fixes, and a broken gtk2

I don't really recall setting this but it appears I'm using playsound with 
KDE. It works too.

$ equery belongs playsound
[ Searching for file(s) playsound in *... ]
media-libs/sdl-sound-1.0.1-r2 (/usr/bin/playsound)

Use the aplay binary provided by alsa-utils.

Thans for the reply. I tried it but it doesn't play a few files. I don't know 
why but some sounds from k3b and kde_beep file don't play at all. I guess I 
will stick to mplayer :)

aye he does and its been discussed before. I at least talked to him
about it, the problem is that alsaplayer is a self contained product
that nothing else truly fills the shoes of. Other things are simple
but they depend on a lot more..etc. Its just a funky little app that
no one has really replaced.
